Reliability-based snow load maps for building design

2015
This paper describes the development of a new snow load map for defining ground snow loads for building (roof) design in the state of Colorado. The newly proposed Colorado maps aim to ensure that structures designed across the state achieve the target safety index of 3 defined in ASCE 7.

Reliable jump detection for snow sports with low-cost MEMS inertial sensors

Sports Technology, 2011
Body-mounted devices, incorporating low-cost micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), for real-time sports performance feedback are commercially available. In sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking, aerial jumps can be detected with these devices and performance variables including air time and jump ...

Reliability Analysis of Slope Stability under the Condition of Extreme Ice-Snow and Frozen Disaster

Earth and Space 2010, 2010
Most areas in south China suffered the rare disaster of low temperature, ice-snow and freezing weather at 2008, which caused serious impact on the society, e.g. power systems, transportation, agriculture and people's living. In this paper, the influence of ice-snow on the infrastructures, such as the slope, is studied; meanwhile the defense work under ...

Quantification of reliability of roofs subjected to snow loadsdetermined by hydrological models

Snow loads exert a significant influence on the structural integrity of buildings in the northern hemisphere, necessitating precise assessment methodologies to ensure the reliability of roofs under this environmental stressor. The determination of roof snow load is intricately linked to evaluating the weight of accumulated snow on the roof surface, a ...

Reliability-based assessment of roofs in Japan subjected to extreme snows: incorporation of site-specific data

Engineering Structures, 2005
Abstract Performance-based engineering is a new paradigm in structural design for natural hazards. In this paper, the authors explore the problem of estimating regional variations in fractiles of snow load used for design purposes from a limited number of discrete observing stations. The reliability implications of such estimates are examined for the
