A methodological proposal for the recovery of palynomorphs from snow and ice samples

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2018
The procedures for a set of techniques to recover grains of pollen 26 and spores from liquid samples are described. Liquefied samples of matrices, such as melting lakes, snow and ice, can provide a record of climatic and environmental events at different

A Novel Bipolar DC Connection Strategy for Photovoltaic Power Plants With a 50% Reduction in DC Cabling Length

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
Bipolar configuration is a new topology in the direct current (DC) system of photovoltaic power plants, which is topologically analogous to the bipolar configuration utilised in High‐Voltage Direct Current power transmission systems. DC cable length and copper usage are reduced by 50% using a bipolar configuration.

Reliably flattened radar backscatter for wet snow mapping from wide-swath sensors

open access: yes, 2013
Retrieval of wet snow extent with high temporal resolution over large areas that include topography requires use of wide swath SAR and radiometric terrain correction to enable backscatter comparisons across different orbital tracks. We report on springtime wet snow mapping using a time series of Envisat ASAR wide swath (WS) images covering the Swiss ...

Thermochronologic Constraints on the Extensional History of the Ibex Hills, Southeastern Black Mountains, Death Valley, California

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
A. Modeled T‐t paths for samples in the northern Ibex Hills, showing steady cooling throughout much of the Cenozoic, until rapid Miocene cooling. B. Weighted mean paths for each sample in this study. Note that all show a rapid cooling event at or just after 10 Ma, which is interpreted to represent exhumation as a result of regional extenstion ...

Independent leaf and root responses to autumn freezing in perennial herbs: Insights from cutting and transplant manipulations

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
In this study, we compared two sampling approaches to assess autumn freezing resistance. Our goal was to determine whether the commonly employed cutting method, which disrupts root‐tissue connectivity, provides a valid measure of true freezing resistance.

Evapotranspiration Estimation and Irrigation Performance Assessment Using Remote Sensing: A Case Study of the Ergani Dam Irrigation System (Turkey)

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Efficient water resource management is critical for sustainable agriculture, with evapotranspiration (ET) serving as a key parameter. Remote sensing (RS) techniques offer cost‐effective approaches for ET estimation and irrigation performance assessment in extensive agricultural systems.

Extreme Climate Events in Morocco: Historical Analysis and Future Projections Based on CMIP6 Simulations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Historical observations and bias‐corrected CMIP6 projections reveal intensifying warm extremes, declining cold events and increasingly irregular precipitation patterns across Morocco. Future warming, particularly under SSP5‐8.5, produces an almost linear amplification of heat, aridity and hydrological stress, leading to longer droughts and more intense

Testing a low-cost ultrasonic sensor to monitor snow depth under harsh Antarctic weather conditions in the South Shetland Islands

open access: yesAntarctic Science
Monitoring snow depth in Antarctica is essential for understanding permafrost dynamics and soil thermal regimes. This study assesses the performance of low-cost, high-resolution, autocleaning ultrasonic sensors (MB7574-SCXL-Maxsonar-WRST7), powered by ...

Degradation of Seasonally Frozen Ground in the Three–River Source Region and Its Correlation Impact Within Precipitation–Runoff Process

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study reveals how climate change alters the water cycle in the Three Rivers Source region by degrading its important ‘solid groundwater’ (seasonally frozen ground). We found that runoff response varies by watershed and the role of permafrost decreases sharply, making water supply more dependent on rainfall and becoming increasingly vulnerable ...
