SNPP VIIRS spectral response lessons learned and their impacts on JPSS VIIRS performance

2015 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2015
A primary sensor on-board the Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) has 22 bands: 14 reflective solar bands (RSBs), 7 thermal emissive bands (TEBs) and a Day Night Band (DNB).

RSB calibration of SNPP VIIRS using solar diffuser illuminated by scattered light

Earth Observing Systems XXII, 2017
We present a new variant to the on-orbit calibration methodology for the reflective solar bands (RSBs) of SNPP VIIRS using solar diffuser (SD). Instead of following the standard method using full solar illumination through SD port that occurs during terminator crossing, we use light scattered off Earth scenes coming through the nadir port as the source

Positional dependence of the SNPP VIIRS SD BRDF degradation factor

Sensors, Systems, and Next-Generation Satellites XXI, 2017
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite is a passive scanning radiometer and an imager. The VIIRS regularly performs on-orbit radiometric calibration of its reflective solar bands (RSBs) through observing an onboard sunlit solar diffuser (SD).

Electronic crosstalk effect in SNPP VIIRS thermal emissive bands (Conference Presentation)

Earth Observing Systems XXII, 2017
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft has been on orbit for more than five years. Pronounced striping in Earth view (EV) images and obvious discontinuity in the EV brightness temperature (BT) of the thermal emissive bands (TEB) during the blackbody (BB) warm-up ...

The May 2013 SNPP Cal/Val Campaign: validation of satellite soundings

SPIE Proceedings, 2014
The NAST-I and SHIS ultra spectral interferometer sounders flew on the NASA ER-2 aircraft during the May 2013 S-NPP Calibration/Validation Campaign. The ER-2 under flew the Metop-A and –B, Aqua, and SNPP satellites, which carry the IASI, AIRS, and CrIS ultra spectral sounding instruments, respectively.

The curious case of the intersensor radiometric comparison of SNPP VIIRS M11 with Aqua MODIS B7

Earth Observing Systems XXII, 2017
The inter-sensor radiometric comparison of the 2257 nm channel (M11) of SNPP VIIRS and the 2130 nm channel (B7) of Aqua MODIS curiously demonstrates a wildly varying time series, in stark contrast to the very stable results of other band pairs. A link is found between the few statistically robust outcomes in the time series and the land-based snowy ...
