Understanding preferences for nature's contributions to people between and within social actors sheds insights for inclusive conservation

open access: yesPeople and Nature
Despite calls for wider inclusion of diverse actors in conservation management, researchers tend to lump actors together into one group, potentially overlooking heterogeneity within the groups themselves—in turn, hampering inclusiveness.

Sustaining Economic Exploitation of Complex Ecosystems in Computational Models of Coupled Human-Natural Networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Understanding ecological complexity has stymied scientists for decades. Recent elucidation of the famously coined "devious strategies for stability in enduring natural systems" has opened up a new field of computational analyses of complex ecological ...

Multifunctional Bio‐Based Packaging for Perishable Foods: Structural Design, Scalable Fabrication, and Versatile Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An overview of design principles and scalable fabrication strategies for multifunctional bio‐based packaging. Radiative cooling films, modified‐atmosphere films/membranes, active antimicrobial/antioxidant platforms, intelligent optical/electrochemical labels, and superhydrophobic surfaces are co‐engineered from material chemistry to mesoscale structure

Applying social-ecological system resilience principles to the context of woody vegetation management in smallholder farming landscapes of the Global South

open access: yesEcosystems and People
Woody vegetation diversity is declining due to human-induced land-use changes, mainly agricultural expansion and intensification, deforestation, forest degradation and urbanisation.

Getting grip on complex water issues? : a case study: Rotterdam Mainport, Appropriate Assessment Wadden Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In Dutch water systems many human interventions are carried out. These interventions are designed to achieve management goals, like increase protection against flooding, improve environmental quality and/or stimulate the national economy. Decision-makers

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Rational Tuning of Hygroscopic Oscillation of Stacked Nanoflake Assemblies for Continuous Ambient Energy Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Stacked nanoflake assembly (SNA) membranes can oscillate autonomously, offering opportunities for soft actuation and energy harvesting. This work uncovers the physical mechanism behind the sustained oscillation of SNA membranes in gradient humidity and identifies three governing dimensionless parameters, enabling rational design for optimizing SNA ...

Implications of external validity for research on polycentric and complex adaptive systems [PDF]

open access: yes
Much recent research has examined the implications of policy analysis for complex adaptive social-ecological systems. System complexity comes from both the natural environment as well as complex institutional arrangements that humans use to manage and ...
