Social learning for resilience in social–ecological systems [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, 2017
Fostering of social learning is generally considered an important governance instrument to build resilience in social-ecological systems. Empirical studies addressing the contribution of social learning to resilience are scarce however, and do not provide direct evidence but infer this contribution from the impacts of social learning on system ...

Micropillar‐Engineered Hybrid Adhesive Patch for Surface‐Conformable and Directional Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This work presents a surface‐conformable hybrid adhesive integrating height‐optimized hexagonal micropillars with open‐rectangular cuts. The micropillars enhance rough‐surface contact and microscale crack arrest, while the cuts guide and reverse interfacial cracks for strong and directional adhesion. The multiscale architecture achieves robust pull‐off

Life Sustains Life 1. Value: Social and Ecological [PDF]

open access: yes
I would like to address the question of social and ecological value by bringing two approaches to this question into conversation with one another and show their connections. The two approaches are those of Jonathan Schell and Akeel Bilgrami.

Modeling and simulating hierarchies using an agent-based approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The notion of complex system covers many different meanings. Socio-economical and ecological systems are typically kind of 'organized complex systems', defined as a middle number of heterogeneous components interacting in an intricate manner and ...

Unreclaimed mines are key habitats for pioneer specialists: A case study on natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita) microhabitat occupancy

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Post-mining areas are populated by many taxa and are particularly important for pioneer species whose primary habitats, such as dynamic floodplains, have largely been degraded. For such species, habitats must be optimally managed beyond the end of mining

Dual‐Functional Ingestible Passive Capsules for High‐Throughput Intestinal Sampling with Sealed Containment and Targeted Drug Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
To address challenges in high‐throughput intestinal sampling with sealed containment and target drug delivery, we developed a dual‐functional ingestible passive capsule with a dual‐triggered control system based on pH‐response and mechanical actuation.
