Marine reserves as linked social–ecological systems [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2010
Marine reserves are increasingly recognized as having linked social and ecological dynamics. This study investigates how the ecological performance of 56 marine reserves throughout the Philippines, Caribbean, and Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is related to both reserve design features and the socioeconomic characteristics in associated coastal communities.

Biodegradable Chitosan Films as Green Resists for Gold Nanowires Fabrication Through AFM‐Based Nanolithography

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of a sustainable nanofabrication process: chitosan derived from natural sources is used as a biodegradable thin film resist, patterned via Constant Pulse‐Assisted Force Lithography (CP‐AFL) to create tunable nanogrooves. These grooves template gold nanowire formation, enabling high‐resolution nanopatterning under ambient ...

Understanding preferences for nature's contributions to people between and within social actors sheds insights for inclusive conservation

open access: yesPeople and Nature
Despite calls for wider inclusion of diverse actors in conservation management, researchers tend to lump actors together into one group, potentially overlooking heterogeneity within the groups themselves—in turn, hampering inclusiveness.

Comparison of Frameworks for Analyzing Social-ecological Systems [PDF]

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2013
(Uploaded by Plazi for the IPBES Invasive Alien Species Assessment) In this paper we compare 10 established frameworks for analyzing social-ecological systems. We limited ourselves to frameworks that were explicitly designed to be used by a wider community of researchers and practitioners.

Cornus Mas L. Seed‐Derived Biosorbent for Methylene Blue Removal: Surface Characterization and Biosorption Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Cornus mas L. seeds are transformed into a high‐performance biosorbent through chemical modification, effectively removing methylene blue from aqueous solutions. Comprehensive characterization and optimization reveal a maximum biosorption capacity of 71.71 mg g−1, establishing this sustainable, cost‐effective material as a promising solution for ...

Living with disturbance : Building resilience in social-ecological systems

open access: yes, 2002
Disturbances such as fire, cyclones, and pest outbreaks create variation in natural systems and ecosystem renewal that may be important for the maintenance of biological diversity.

Applying social-ecological system resilience principles to the context of woody vegetation management in smallholder farming landscapes of the Global South

open access: yesEcosystems and People
Woody vegetation diversity is declining due to human-induced land-use changes, mainly agricultural expansion and intensification, deforestation, forest degradation and urbanisation.

Efficient and resilient governance of social–ecological systems [PDF]

open access: yesAmbio, 2015
New institutions are critically needed to improve the resilience of social-ecological systems globally. Watershed management offers an important model due to its ability to govern mixed-ownership landscapes through common property regimes, translating national goals into local action.
