Egypt and the Middle East: Democracy, Anti-Democracy and Pragmatic Faith [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this article, I discuss prospects for democracy in the Middle East. I argue, first, that some democratic experiments—for instance, Egypt under Mohammed Morsi—are not in keeping with etymological and historical meanings of

Social Choice, Crypto-Initiaives, and Policymaking by Direct Democracy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The initiative process was created originally to enable citizens to enact public policy directly and in so doing to overturn the dominion of interest groups and of state and local party machines.

Atomic‐Scale Light Coupling Control in Ultrathin Photonic Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin photonic nanomembranes provide atomic‐scale control over the coupling between incident light and high‐Q photonic modes, enabling angstrom‐level resonance tuning and strong field confinement. When integrated with TMD monolayers, they further yield enhanced light–matter interactions, offering a versatile platform for advancing quantum photonics,

Scalable Polyelectrolyte Complex‐Based Sorbent With Hourly Sorption−Desorption Cycles for Multicyclic Atmospheric Water Harvesting in Arid Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A polyelectrolyte complex‐based sorbent is produced by scalable, environmentally benign aqueous phase inversion. Its porous, LiCl‐ and GO‐integrated architecture enables hourly adsorption−desorption cycles at low relative humidity (RH < 30%). A large‐scale prototype achieves multicyclic, solar‐driven atmospheric water harvesting of 1.37 L kg−1 day−1 ...

Questions of War and Peace in the Theoretical Views of Karl Kautsky

open access: yesНаучный диалог, 2019
The views on the problem of war and peace of one of the leading theorists of the Social Democratic movement Karl Kautsky is discussed in the article. The evolution of his views on the issues of the origin of wars, their types, methods of achieving peace,

Exile the Rich! [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The rich have two defining capabilities: independence from and command over others. These make being wealthy very pleasant indeed, but they are also toxic to democracy.

On Rational Delegations in Liquid Democracy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Liquid democracy is a proxy voting method where proxies are delegable. We propose and study a game-theoretic model of liquid democracy to address the following question: when is it rational for a voter to delegate her vote? We study the existence of pure-

Regiorandom Polythiophenes for Fully Stretchable Electrochemical Transistors and Logic Circuits

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Regiorandom (RRa) polythiophenes, once regarded as unsuitable for electronics, exhibit exceptional switching performance via volumetric electrochemical doping. Optimized RRa‐based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) achieve a high on/off ratio (≈104), stable operation under 200% strain, and enable fully stretchable logic gates, demonstrating ...

Filling the Gaps in Civil Society The Role of the Catholic Church in Latin American Democratization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper, we seek to draw lessons about the roles that religious institutions can play in promoting democracy in deeply divided societies by examining the experience of the Catholic Church in Latin America.

Temperature‐Modulated Threshold Response in a Volatile Memristor: Toward a Biomimetic Polymodal Nociceptive System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates an artificial polymodal nociceptor whose firing threshold is actively modulated by temperature. A volatile TiN/TiOx/ZnO/TiOx/ITO memristor shows interfacial ion–driven resistive switching and membrane‐potential‐like dynamics, enabling temperature‐dependent nociceptive behavior.
