INTROJECTION: A FORM OF SOCIAL LEARNING*
British Journal of Psychology, 1964Evidence from previous studies is interpreted in terms of introjection as the learning of self‐reactions from the reaction of others. This is a form of learning which differs from others in that it is more permanent, generalizes to all situations, and exists in conflict with the rest of the personality.

The Simmelian call for a formal sociology is applied to aloneness to uncover generic patterns of relation between the individual and the community. Three forms of aloneness are distinguished by focusing on the interactional and relational levels of sociation underlying each. Other‐imposed aloneness as represented by isolation is an asymmetric form.
