Agricultural Diversification at the Margin. Strategies and Determinants in Italian Mountain and Remote Areas

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the convergence in on‐farm diversification strategies of agricultural holdings, between remote areas and more central ones. Using Italian farm‐level data, we explore the determinants of diversification strategies across farms.

Food Tastes in the United States: Convergence or Divergence?

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates how food consumption tastes have changed in recent decades across the United States. Using NielsenIQ data for over 77 million transactions, there is evidence of divergence in food tastes across regions from 2007 to 2016 and across households of different income, education, and race/ethnicity groups.

Social Distancing, Internet Access and Inequality

open access: yesSocial Science Research Network, 2020
This paper measures the role of the diffusion of high-speed Internet on an individual's ability to self-isolate during a global pandemic. We use data that tracks 20 million mobile devices and their movements across physical locations, and whether the ...

The Power of Unity: Collective Action and Smallholder Agricultural Performance in West Africa

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We analyze the impact of collective action through farmer‐based organizations (FBOs) on smallholders' farm performance and income inequality in Ghana, Benin, The Gambia, and Mali. We find that FBO membership increases cereal yield in Ghana and The Gambia, legume yield in Mali, ruminant numbers in Benin and The Gambia, and total farm income in ...

A multiscale Bayesian optimization framework for process and material codesign

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract The simultaneous design of processes and enabling materials such as solvents, catalysts, and adsorbents is challenging because molecular‐ and process‐level decisions are strongly interdependent. Sequential approaches often yield suboptimal results since improvements in material properties may not translate into superior process performance. We

Trust‐region filter algorithms utilizing Hessian information for gray‐box optimization

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Optimizing industrial processes often involves gray‐box models that couple algebraic glass‐box equations with black‐box components lacking analytic derivatives. Such systems challenge derivative‐based solvers. The classical trust‐region filter (TRF) algorithm provides a robust framework but requires extensive parameter tuning and numerous ...
