Favoritism Under Social Pressure [PDF]

open access: greenSSRN Electronic Journal, 2001
This paper is concerned with the effect of nonmonetary incentives on behavior, in particular with the study of social pressure as a determinant of corruption. Testing the social pressure hypothesis: Does in-party social pressure reduce out-party empathy? [PDF]

open access: yesPNAS Nexus
Abstract Empathy is considered one of the most critical components for bridging political divides and reducing animosity between political groups. Yet, empathy between political opponents is rare. 'Giving' in to Social Pressure [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2015
We develop a theory of charitable giving in which donors feel social pressure from a direct solicitation. We show that equilibrium donations are concentrated around a social norm. Despite a higher level of the public good, relatively poor and/or low altruism givers fare worse under social pressure and would avoid the solicitor at a cost.

Favouritism, social pressure, and gender

Abstract We analyse gender differences in response to social pressure. Our setting provides information on decision-making by both female and male referees towards rewarding extra time in football. The exact score at the time of the decision allows us to evaluate how much it favours the home team and, hence, pleases the audience ...
