Social thermoregulation during hibernation in alpine marmots (Marmota marmota)
Body temperature (Tb) of socially hibernating alpine marmots, a pair and two family groups, was monitored continuously from October to March with implanted temperature-sensitive radiotransmitters. At the same time, the animals' behaviour was observed.

A strict underground style of life is one of the greatest challenges for mammals partly due to the high energetic cost of obtaining food by digging through a mechanically resistant substrate. Any energy saving adaptation, for example the effect of social thermoregulation, is thus very important for subterranean mammals.

The role of behavior is quantified in the maintenance of thermic homeostasis by a semiaquatic rodent, the coypu (Myocastor coypus). Indirect calorimetry measurements showed that huddling behavior is responsible for a 20% drop in resting metabolic rate at temperatures below the thermoneutral zone.

We assessed patterns and energetic consequences of different overwintering strategies, torpor, and social thermoregulation in the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) under natural ambient temperature and photoperiod. Striped skunks entered spontaneous daily torpor, with the lowest torpid body temperature (T(b)) reaching 26.0 degrees C, the lowest ...
