As of September, 1991, according to estimates furnished by the Banco Internacional de Desarrollo, the overall cost of the infrastructure damage and loss of export revenue occasioned by the earthquake was approximately $500 million. Over 7,000 houses were destroyed or damaged severely enough to require demolition.
