In today’s Australia, English is, as it has been since the commencement of White settlement in 1788, the dominant language. Accordingly, I shall focus in the first part of this chapter on the mainstream variety of Australian English (‘AusE’), rooted in the country’s Anglo-Celtic heritage and recognizable as the national language.
