Microbiology of Lonar Lake and other soda lakes [PDF]

open access: yesThe ISME Journal, 2012
Abstract Soda lakes are saline and alkaline ecosystems that are believed to have existed throughout the geological record of Earth. They are widely distributed across the globe, but are highly abundant in terrestrial biomes such as deserts and steppes and in geologically interesting regions such as the East African Rift valley.

Phylogenetic diversity of soda lake alkaliphiles [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Ecology, 1996
16S rRNA genes from a range of aerobic chemoorganotrophic, alkaliphilic soda lake Bacteria and Archaea have been sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. Gram-negative alkaliphiles were found to be confined to the γ3 subdivision of the Proteobacteria, with many isolates related to the Halomonas/Deleya group.

Microbial communities of selected regions of the Deep Springs Lake aquifer system [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Deep Springs Lake is a small, isolated, highly alkaline soda lake in Inyo County of Eastern California, USA. It is a seasonally filled salt lake or playa, and is part of a closed aquifer system.

Bacterial diversity of lonar soda lake of India. [PDF]

open access: yesIndian J Microbiol, 2011
Total seventy four bacteria were isolated from Lonar soda lake of Maharashtra state, India. Eleven isolates were identified using morphological, biochemical and molecular analysis. The bacteria isolated belonged to phylum firmicutes and proteobacteria. Majorities (eight) were firmicutes and three were proteobacteria. For the first time we are reporting

Salinity-induced succession of phototrophic communities in a southwestern Siberian soda lake during the solar activity cycle [PDF]

open access: yesHeliyon
A variety of lakes located in the dry steppe area of southwestern Siberia are exposed to rapid climatic changes, including intra-century cycles with alternating dry and wet phases driven by solar activity.

Influence of environmental variables and anthropogenic activities on soda-saline lakes chemistry in northern Tanzania: A remote sensing and GIS approach [PDF]

open access: yesHeliyon
This study employed Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems to explore the influence of environmental factors and human-induced land use/land cover changes on the chemistry of soda-saline lakes in Northern Tanzania.

Biodiversity and culture of prokaryotes inhabiting haloalkaline and meromictic Soap Lake, Washington, USA [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Despite their potential for harboring novel microorganisms exhibiting beneficial metabolisms or that produce useful products for biotechnology and industry, alkaline lakes and soils are among the least studied extreme environments.

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial diversity from three soda lakes in the East African Rift Valley determined by amplicon sequencing

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Soda lakes are unique poly-extreme environments with high alkalinity and salinity that support diverse microbial communities despite their extreme nature.

Two new alkali-sink specialist species of Paruroctonus Werner 1934 (Scorpiones, Vaejovidae) from central California [PDF]

open access: yesZooKeys, 2022
Herein we describe two new species of Paruroctonus (Werner 1934) from California: Paruroctonus soda sp. nov. from the Soda Lake playa at the center of the Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo county and Paruroctonus conclusus sp. nov.
