The microbial sulfur cycle at extremely haloalkaline conditions of soda lakes [PDF]
Microbial sulfur cycle is among the most active in soda lakes. Oxidative part of the cycle is driven by chemolithoautotrophic haloalkaliphilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Microbial diversity and biogeochemical cycling in soda lakes. [PDF]
Soda lakes contain high concentrations of sodium carbonates resulting in a stable elevated pH, which provide a unique habitat to a rich diversity of haloalkaliphilic bacteria and archaea. Both cultivation-dependent and -independent methods have aided the identification of key processes and genes in the microbially mediated carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur ...

Surprising prokaryotic and eukaryotic diversity, community structure and biogeography of Ethiopian soda lakes. [PDF]
Soda lakes are intriguing ecosystems harboring extremely productive microbial communities in spite of their extreme environmental conditions. This makes them valuable model systems for studying the connection between community structure and abiotic ...

Chemolithotrophic haloalkaliphiles from soda lakes [PDF]
This paper summarizes recent data on the occurrence and properties of lithotrophic prokaryotes found in extremely alkaline, saline (soda) lakes. Among the chemolithotrophs found in these lakes the obligately autotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were the dominant, most diverse group, best adapted to haloalkaline conditions.

Haloalkaliphilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in soda lakes [PDF]
The existence of chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) capable of growth in an extremely alkaline and saline environment has not been recognized until recently. Extensive studies of saline, alkaline (soda) lakes located in Central Asia, Africa and North America have now revealed the presence, at relatively high numbers, of a new branch ...

Abundant Taxa and Favorable Pathways in the Microbiome of Soda-Saline Lakes in Inner Mongolia
Soda-saline lakes are a special type of alkaline lake in which the chloride concentration is greater than the carbonate/bicarbonate concentration. Due to the high pH and a usually higher osmotic pressure than that of a normal soda lake, the microbes may ...

Nitrogen Fixation and Anoxygenic Photosynthesis in Filamentous Non-Heterocystous Cyanobacterium of the Genus Sodalinema Isolated from Soda Lake [PDF]
Saline and highly alkaline soda lakes are often characterized by a persistent nitrogen loss and high sulfide levels. Cyanobacteria are key aerobic diazotrophs in soda lakes, where light-dependent nitrogen fixation (NF) is crucial for sustaining ecosystem

A review of the defining chemical properties of soda lakes and pans: An assessment on a large geographic scale of Eurasian inland saline surface waters. [PDF]
The aim of this study is to evaluate the definition of water chemical type, with particular attention to soda brine characteristics by assessing ionic composition and pH values on a large geographic scale and broad salinity (TDS) range of Eurasian inland

Phenotypic and Genomic Properties of a Novel Deep-Lineage Haloalkaliphilic Member of the Phylum Balneolaeota From Soda Lakes Possessing Na+-Translocating Proteorhodopsin [PDF]
Stable development of a heterotrophic bacterial satellite with a peculiar cell morphology has been observed in several enrichment cultures of haloalkaliphilic benthic filamentous cyanobacteria from a hypersaline soda lake in Kulunda Steppe (Altai, Russia)
