Chronic Rhinitis with Nasal Polyposis Associated with Sodium Glutamate Intolerance
International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 2007The study reports a case of perennial rhinitis with bilateral polyposis. A careful diagnostic workup revealed that the disorder was caused by sodium glutamate intolerance. This is the first study showing an association between intolerance to food additives and nasal polyposis.

The Toxic Effect of Sodium L-Glutamate on the Inner Layers of the Retina
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1957L-Glutamic acid and its sodium salt have been widely used in the oral treatment of petit mal and mental deficiency (e. g., Zimmerman, Burgemeister, and Putnam, 1949; Milliken and Standen, 1951). Single doses of 20-30 gm. have also been administered intravenously without permanent illeffects (Sapirstein, 1943; Elman, 1946; Mayer-Gross and Walker, 1949 ...

Structure and Function of Sodium-coupled GABA and Glutamate Transporters
Journal of Membrane Biology, 2006Neurotransmitter transporters are key elements in the termination of the synaptic actions of the neurotransmitters. They use the energy stored in the electrochemical ion gradients across the plasma membrane of neurons and glial cells for uphill transport of the transmitters into the cells surrounding the synapse.

Freeze denaturation of carp myosin and its prevention by sodium glutamate
Cryobiology, 1981Abstract The nature and mechanism of the freeze denaturation of fish myosin was clarified by measuring changes in solubility, ATPase activity, and filament reconstituting capacity over 8 weeks of storage at −20 °C. Carp myosin was stored in three states: (i) solution in 0.6 M KCl, (ii) dumbbell-shaped filament suspension, and (iii) spindle-shaped ...
