Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Flexible Substrate-Compatible and Efficiency-Improved Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with Reduced Annealing Temperature of NiOx Hole-Injecting Layer

open access: yesMolecules
The growing demand for wearable and attachable displays has sparked significant interest in flexible quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). However, the challenges of fabricating and operating QLEDs on flexible substrates persist due to the lack of ...

Spontaneous liquid crystal and ferromagnetic ordering of colloidal magnetic nanoplates

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Ferromagnetism has been known as a material property of solids since the time of the ancient Greeks. Here, Shuai et al. report that magnetic nanoplates suspended in a simple solvent can spontaneously align to form a ferromagnetic liquid, capable of both ...

A metal-free photocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen peroxide photoproduction in real seawater

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
It is a challenge to produce hydrogen peroxide in seawater by photocatalysis. Here, the authors design and synthesize a metal-free photocatalyst based on carbon dots with a salt-protective electron sink effect, which exhibits enhanced hydrogen peroxide ...

Slow dynamics, aging, and glassy rheology in soft and living matter

open access: yes, 2006
We explore the origins of slow dynamics, aging and glassy rheology in soft and living matter. Non-diffusive slow dynamics and aging in materials characterised by crowding of the constituents can be explained in terms of structural rearrangement or ...

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

A green approach to dual-drug nanoformulations with targeting and synergistic effects for cancer therapy

open access: yesDrug Delivery, 2017
Exploration of efficient dual-drug nanohybrids, particularly those with high drug loading, specific targeting property, and long-termed stability, is of highly importance in cancer therapy.

Dietary nitrate and nitrite protect against doxorubicin‐induced cardiac fibrosis and oxidative protein damage in tumor‐bearing mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapies such as doxorubicin can have toxic effects on healthy cardiovascular/heart tissue. Following up on a doxorubicin toxicity study in mice without tumors where nitrate water was cardioprotective (lessened toxicity), this study with tumor‐bearing mice undergoing doxorubicin treatment showed no negative effect of nitrate and nitrite on drug ...

Programmable probiotics modulate inflammation and gut microbiota for inflammatory bowel disease treatment after effective oral delivery

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex disease that is associated with multiple genetic and environmental variables. Here the authors develop genetically engineered probiotics with selfproducing functional proteins and biofilm self-coating for ...

Stretchable elastic synaptic transistors for neurologically integrated soft engineering systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Artificial synaptic devices that can be stretched similar to those appearing in soft-bodied animals, such as earthworms, could be seamlessly integrated onto soft machines toward enabled neurological functions.
