Engineering View of Soft Rocks

2019
The chapter deals with engineering concepts related with soft rocks. Different classifications of soft rock are introduced. The strength characteristics of soft rock are related to the magnitude of ground stress. The concepts of critical softening load and critical softening depth is induced.

Deformation Mechanism of Soft Rock

2019
The deformation mechanism of soft rocks can be divided into three categories: physical and chemical expansion mechanism, stress dilatancy mechanism, and structural deformation mechanism. The deformation mechanism of soft rock roadway in mines is usually complex, often a combination of three or more types.

The Geology of Soft Rocks

2019
One may think that geological affiliation and environmental conditions of formations are the main hint to understand the mechanical properties of the rocks. It is expected that the input of highly energetic pressure–temperature (PT) conditions should impose the formation of harder rocks in relation to those related to the origin of soft rocks. Although

A viscoplastic model for soft rock

Engineering Computations, 1988
The aim of the model is to represent the main features of soft or brittle rock strata, using a small number of physically‐meaningful material parameters. The yield surface is based on either the Mohr—Coulomb or Hoek—Brown criterion, and a simple small‐dilation flow rule allows the implicit algorithm of elasto‐viscoplasticity to be used. Elastic—brittle

A Constitutive Model for Soft Rocks

2007
An isotropic, volumetric strain hardening, non-associated plasticity model, based on the critical state framework and similar to the Modified Cam Clay model, is proposed for simulating the stress-strain and volume change response of soft rocks. The model is relatively simple and has four parameters in addition to those of the Modified Cam Clay.

Experiments on Soft-Rock Deformation

AAPG Bulletin, 1935
ABSTRACT The paper describes laboratory experiments illustrating deformation of soft sediments produced by slump, differential movement, and differential loading. It explains some of the structures developed, and suggests criteria by which soft-rock deformation may be differentiated from hard-rock deformation.

Between a Rock and a Soft Place

Christian Higher Education, 2012
Catholic colleges and universities are caught between two competing pressures. On the one side the church hierarchy, especially the Vatican, wants to make certain that these institutions of higher learning remain faithful to the intellectual tradition and the teachings of the church.

Triaxial Testing of Soft Rocks

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2011
Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to describe the present practice for triaxial testing at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute with particular reference to testing of soft rocks from the oil reservoirs in the North Sea. The following aspects related to this testing are described: (a) testing equipment, (b) procedures for ...
