HERMES: a soft X-ray beamline dedicated to X-ray microscopy

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, 2015
The HERMES beamline (High Efficiency and Resolution beamline dedicated to X-ray Microscopy and Electron Spectroscopy), built at Synchrotron SOLEIL (Saint-Auban, France), is dedicated to soft X-ray microscopy. The beamline combines two complementary microscopy methods: XPEEM (X-ray Photo Emitted Electron Microscopy) and STXM (Scanning Transmission X-ray

Short soft x‐ray sources

X-Ray Spectrometry, 2009
Abstract In this work we report on the characterization of pulsed soft x‐rays emitted from laser‐produced plasma. The plasma was generated by a pulsed KrF excimer laser focused on pure Si, Cu and Ta targets by 40, 80 and 120 mJ laser energies.

Soft X-ray interferometry and holography

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1986
Developments in the fundamental optics for soft X-ray interferometry and holography are reviewed. To improve the quality of interference fringes it is essential to develop the soft X-ray sources, optical components and recording films. In this study soft X-ray radiation emitted from the undulator arranged in the 2.5 GeV Photon Factory ring was used, as

A collimator for soft x rays

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1974
A novel collimator is described which makes use of eight identical plates having holes located randomly. A holder aligns the plates so that on-axis x rays pass through the same hole in each successive plate. Off-axis x rays are attenuated by a factor of T8(=2×10−4), where T is the transmission of a single plate.

A Soft X-Ray Experimental Facility

Advances in X-ray Analysis, 1984
AbstractA high vacuum soft x-ray source has been coupled to a large volume experimental chamber to provide a versatile facility for x-ray investigations in the energy range of 0.1 to 10 kev. The source chamber presently contains a modified Herike tube, but can employ any of a variety of source designs.

Soft X-ray photoabsorption of the NO dimer

Molecular Physics, 1995
X-ray absorption spectra are reported for the first time for the (NO)(2) dimer at both the nitrogen and oxygen K edges, the data being obtained from (NO)(2) multilayers formed on Ag{111}. The spectra display distinctive features which suggest an electronic structure for excited states of this species.

Soft X-ray microscopy at the NSLS

Proceedings IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, 2003
Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopes are used to image 0.1-10 micron thick specimens at 20-50 nm resolution using zone plate focusing. Many of the applications of these instruments make use of the elemental and chemical sensitivity of XANES spectroscopy combined with microscopy.

Demonstration of a Soft X-Ray Amplifier

Physical Review Letters, 1985
We report observations of amplified spontaneous emission at soft x-ray wavelengths. An optical laser ionized thin foils of selenium to produce a population inversion of the $2{p}^{5}3p$ and $2{p}^{5}3s$ levels of the neonlike ion. Using three time-resolved, spectroscopic measurements we demonstrated gain-length products up to 6.5 and gain coefficients ...

Soft X-Rays

Physical Review, 1919
Method.---Soft X-rays were produced by the impact of electrons from a hot-lime cathode against a platinum anode. Potentials of 20 to 1,000 volts were used to give the electrons the desired velocity of impact. The properties of the rays were studied by observing the velocity and number of electrons produced on a brass plate by a narrow beam of soft X ...
