Testing is a relatively neglected component of the computer science curriculum. It lacks the glamour associated with more constructive activities such as software design and implementation. However, it is the primary verification and validation technique for software and, as such, plays a critical role in the software development process.

Software testing and certification
ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review, 1972Society needs a continous flow of upgradding products and services which are responsive to needs, are reliable, cost-effective and safe. When this does not occur, excessive regulation and resulting stifled technology and production results. Excesses in both directions have occurred in other fields such as medicine, the automobile industry, petro ...

Annals of Software Engineering, 1997
This paper presents a method for test case selection that allows a formal approach to testing software. The two main ideas are (1) that testers create stochastic models of software behavior instead of crafting individual test cases and (2) that specific test cases are generated from the stochastic models and applied to the software under test.

The complexity of software testing
Software Engineering Journal, 1992The futility of using a general-purpose metric to characterise ‘the’ complexity of a program has recently been argued to support the design of specific metrics for the different stages of the software life-cycle. An analysis of the module testing activity is performed, providing evidence of the absurdity of all-purpose metrics, as well as a methodical ...

An automated testing system that is well integrated into the software development process is considered. The knowledge-based interactive test script system (Kitss) focuses on functional testing. It ignores a program's internal design and structure and directly uncovers discrepancies in the program's behavior as viewed from the outside world. Kitss uses

Software Quality, Software Process, and Software Testing
1995Abstract Software testing should play a major role in the definition and improvement of software development processes, because testing is the most precise, most easily measured, and most easily controlled part of the software lifecycle. However, unless testing goals are clearly related to true measurements of software quality, the testing may ...

Introduction to Software Testing
2008Extensively class-tested, this textbook takes an innovative approach to software testing: it defines testing as the process of applying a few well-defined, general-purpose test criteria to a structure or model of the software. It incorporates the latest innovations in testing, including techniques to test modern types of software such as OO, web ...

Insights into software testing
Software Focus, 2001AbstractMARTIN WOODWARD aims to provide a brief insight into some of the many aspects of software testing. The various stages required when testing large software systems are outlined and then a selection of possible testing techniques are described and illustrated.

Abstract Regression testing, which attempts to validate modified software and ensure that no new errors are introduced into previously tested code, is used extensively during maintenance of evolving software. Despite efforts to reduce its cost, regression testing remains one of the most expensive activities performed during a software system's ...
