This chapter relies on experience with tool development gained over the last thirty years. It shows that there are a large number of techniques that contribute to any successful project, and that formality is always the key: a modern software test tool is based on a firm mathematical foundation. After a brief introduction, Section 2 recalls and extends

From the start of the MU5 project it was clear that the productivity of the software group would be a critical factor, and a lot of emphasis was placed on the provision of software tools. The project aim of designing the hardware to fit the software requirements meant that the software design had to run ahead of the hardware design.

Software Licenses - A tool to control distribution of software
ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes, 2012The International Workshop on Developing Tools as Plug-Ins (TOPI) is a venue for researchers and practitioners interested in plug-in development. The main interest is understanding the opportunities and challenges of developing tools as plug-ins, and thus, we seek for discussions regarding the characteristics of good plug-ins, interoperability ...

A prototyping tool for graphical software engineering tools
ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes, 1987The paper introduces (1) a meta system, ERA Meta-Graph System, to define graphical modeling formalisms and to prototype their rule-based graphical editors, and (2) an example usage of the system to prototype some rule-based diagram editors for software designing process.

Integration of software tools in software engineering education
Proceedings of 9th Conference on Software Engineering Education, 2002There are significant benefits to be gained from promoting extensive use of software tools and environments in software engineering education, providing that they are educationally appropriate. This paper describes practice and experience of using a "purpose-built" teaching support environment specifically designed to emphasise the systematic nature of

Software Tools for Software Sharing
1983In this chapter we consider software tools which help in the process of implementing a program at a site other than the originator’s. We are concerned not with the installation of basic operating system software amongst machines of the same type but with the transference of “applications” programs written in a high level language on the same or ...
