The secondary xylem of the conifers is commonly called softwood. This term can at times be misleading, however, as many coniferous woods are physically quite hard while some angiosperm hardwoods are, in fact, quite soft (e.g. balsa). Softwoods are simpler and more homogeneous in structure than hardwoods.

Capillary pressure in softwoods
Wood Science and Technology, 1981To predict the capillary transport of free liquid during the drying of softwood, it is essential to have knowledge of capillary pressure as a function of moisture content. The dependence of the capillary pressure on the wood's moisture content is predicted with a mechanistic model and measured for isothermal moisture movement in the tangetial direction.

SOFTWOOD GRAFTING IN JACKFRUIT
Acta Horticulturae, 2011Jackfruit is one of the tropical fruits with multiple uses. Huge variability exists in this crop due to seed propagation. Vegetative propagation will help in fixing the characters of superior types. A study on softwood grafting in jackfruit was conducted at the Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad by taking up ...

Delignification of softwood by ozonation
Pure and Applied Chemistry, 2009Ozonation of aspen sawdust of various moisture content (MC) values was investigated. Ozone consumption corresponding to the completion of the ozonation process was shown to be governed by the wood MC. Cellulose-containing material of a low (1–3 %) residual lignin content (LC) was produced under ozonation. It is proposed that ozone dissolved in water is

Previous work has shown that sulfonation post-treatment employed at a temperature of 130–140 °C modifies the lignin in steam-pretreated softwood to improve the ease of hydrolysis of the resulting “post-treated” substrate.

Fracture behaviour of softwood
Mechanics of Materials, 2003Abstract In design wood is regarded as a brittle material, depending on the stress direction, duration of loading and moisture content. The usual presumption is that wood is perfectly brittle–elastic (linear elastic fracture mechanics, LEFM), or that its behaviour mimics other materials such as concrete.
