Soils are often extremely heterogeneous in their structure and chemical composition. A soil not only consists of solid matter of mineral or organic origin but also contains numerous pores, which altogether form a cavity system that is connected to the atmosphere.

Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, 1982
During the summer of 1980, excavations at Shaugh Moor were extended to the Saddlesborough reave, it was hoped to establish the nature of the land boundaries which characterise this part of Dartmoor. In this area the reave runs downslope in a south-easterly direction away from Saddlesborough and it was investigated by a number of sections at ...

SOIL EXTRACT IN SOIL MICROBIOLOGY
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1958Soil extract contains unidentified growth factors not present in other materials. In this study the extract was considered critically in so far as various treatments affect numbers of bacteria developing on soil-extract agar. Dilution of the extract to 1/10th concentration produced lower counts in most soils.

Soil Colloids and the Soil Solution
1991In the companion volume to this book (‘Soil Colloids and Their Associations in Aggregates’; M.F. De Boodt, M.H.B. Hayes, and A. Herbillon, eds.; Plenum Press, New York and London, 1990), attention was focused on the composition and structures of the colloidal components of soils and on the associations in aggregates between these and the other ...

Soil data for crop-soil models
1993Systems approaches for agricultural development can be realized at different levels of detail which are associated with different data needs. For soils five levels were defined, ranging from farmer’s knowledge and expert systems to use of complex simulation models.

Soil Fauna and Soil Microflora as Possible Indicators of Soil Pollution
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 1983Research on biological indicators of soil pollution is hampered by soil variability and temporal and spatial fluctuations of numbers of soil animals. These characters on the other hand promote a high biological diversity in the soil. A high diversity combined with persistent soil pollutants increases the chance to select good indicators.
