Virgin compression of structured soils
Géotechnique, 1999This paper describes a study of the virgin compression behaviour of both naturally and artificially structured soils under one-dimensional compression or isotropic compression. It is proposed that during virgin compression, the additional voids ratio sustained by soil structure is inversely proportional to the current mean effective stress.

Energy concept and soil compression
2005Energy exchanges universally exist in all the formation of soils. Work done on soils by various external agents can either harden or soften soils, depending on initial and boundary conditions of soil media. This paper focuses on the absorbed energy of compacted samples from three soils and the variation of their volume-mass properties during compaction

Undrained Compressibility of Saturated Soil
1984Abstract : A series of equations for the bulk and constrained compressibility of undrained saturated granular soils are developed. Four sets of equations are developed, each set using a more complicated and realistic set of assumptions describing the soil behavior.

Compressibility of Partly Saturated Soils
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1985From the considerations of the truncated diffuse double layer due to partial saturation, an equilibrium equation is written in terms of the soil state parameter viz. void ratio, e, void ratio at liquid limit, e=wG, degree of saturation, S and external applied stress, p. The type of fine grained soil is subdued by its liquid limit.

Compression of soil around roots
Plant and Soil, 1987A simplified model is developed for soil compression around plant roots. The main assumptions are that the root volume is accommodated by loss of porosity in the surrounding soil; that there is a minimum soil porosity below which soil will not be compressed; and that the density decreases exponentially with distance from the roots surface with an ...

Compressibility and Consolidation of Soils
2015The total compression of soil under load is composed of three components (i.e. elastic settlement, primary consolidation settlement, and secondary compression). The consolidation component is time-dependent and its analysis is usually based on Terzaghi's theory.

Undrained Isotropic Compression of Soil
2006This paper deals with a theoretical description of the undrained and drained behaviour of unsaturated soils under isotropic load. By taking into account the compressibility of the solid mass and the fluid/gas mixture inside the pores a theoretical relation between the pore water coefficient (B) and the saturation (Sr) is derived, which is shown to be ...
