Forest Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles under Biomass Harvest: Stability, Transient Response, and Feedback [PDF]
Biomass harvest generates an imbalance in forest carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles and the nonlinear biogeochemical responses may have long-term consequences for soil fertility and sustainable management.

This study identified DNA viruses from Qiangyong proglacial lake sediments on the Tibetan Plateau, revealing a highly diverse and previously uncharacterized viral community. These viruses influence microbial community structure and function by infecting key nutrient‐transforming taxa and encoding auxiliary metabolic genes that modulate host metabolism.

Simulation of greenhouse gases following land-use change to bioenergy crops using the ECOSSE model : a comparison between site measurements and model predictions [PDF]
This work contributes to the ELUM (Ecosystem Land Use Modelling & Soil Carbon GHG Flux Trial) project, which was commissioned and funded by the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI). We acknowledge the E-OBS data set from the EU-FP6 project ENSEMBLES (http:

This mini‐review synthesises evidence on the taxonomic patterns of airborne microorganisms and the selective pressures they face. We highlight key conserved physiological traits, such as DNA repair and desiccation tolerance, which enable stress‐tolerant members to survive and suggest their potential for activity within the atmospheric environment ...

Vertical and horizontal variation of carbon pools and fluxes in soil profile of wet southern taiga in European Russia [PDF]
Vertical and horizontal distributions of soil organic carbon, potential microbial activity and basic soil properties were studied in a boreal mixed forest (Central Forest Reserve, TVER region) to elucidate whether the soil CO2-efflux is related to basic ...

Controls on Seasonal Atmosphere‐Ecosystem Carbon Dioxide Exchanges in a Temperate Salt Marsh
We quantified net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide in a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh on the eastern shore of Virginia using eddy‐covariance measurements from March 2016 to February 2017. Peak carbon dioxide uptake occurred during summer, with tidal inundation reducing both daytime assimilation and nighttime respiration, while diffuse light ...

Ecosystem carbon 7 dioxide fluxes after disturbance in forests of North America [PDF]
Disturbances are important for renewal of North American forests. Here we summarize more than 180 site years of eddy covariance measurements of carbon dioxide flux made at forest chronosequences in North America. The disturbances included stand-replacing

Predicting plankton net community production in the Atlantic Ocean [PDF]
We present, test and implement two contrasting models to predict euphotic zone net community production (NCP), which are based on 14C primary production (PO14CP) to NCP relationships over two latitudinal (ca.

Carbon allocation and carbon isotope fluxes in the plant-soil-atmosphere continuum: a review [PDF]
The terrestrial carbon (C) cycle has received increasing interest over the past few decades, however, there is still a lack of understanding of the fate of newly assimilated C allocated within plants and to the soil, stored within ecosystems and lost to ...
