CONSOLIDATION OF A CROSS-ANISOTROPIC SOIL MEDIUM

The Quarterly Journal of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, 1984
The paper presents a solution, using integral transforms, for the consolidation of a soil medium with cross-anisotropic deformation and flow properties. Numerical results are presented for circular and rectangular surface loading of an infinitely deep medium.

The Soil as a Porous Medium

1996
The soil is the upper layer of the unsaturated zone of the earth. Soils are very diverse in composition and behavior. The solid phase consists of mineral particles of various sizes and shapes and organic matter in various stages of degradation. Plant roots and the living soil population complete the system.

Soil-structure interaction in a layered medium

International Journal of Engineering Science, 1990
Abstract A hybrid method based on the Green's function formalism is proposed for two-dimensional dynamic soil-structure interaction analysis in a multilayered half-space. The method models the near field (structure and surrounding soil) by finite elements and solves the far field problem through a continuum approach based on an adaptation of the ...

The Soil as a Plant Nutrient Medium

2001
Soil is a heterogeneous material consisting of three major components: a solid phase, a liquid phase and a gaseous phase. All three phases specifically influence the supply of nutrients to plant roots. The solid phase is the main nutrient reservoir. The inorganic particles of this phase contain cationic nutrients such as K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and ...

REACTIVITY OF TWO ACIDITY CORRECTIVES IN A MEDIUM TEXTURE SOIL

Revista Caribeña de Ciencias Sociales, 2023
For crops to have good productivity, it is necessary to adopt agricultural practices that ensure an adequate supply of water and nutrients, and neutralize toxic elements in the soil, especially exchangeable aluminum, both in the arable layer and in the subsurface.

Pollutants Transport in the Soil Medium

1996
After reaching the soil-solid surfaces, before, while, or after being subjected to biologically or chemically induced transformation, or retained by the soil constituents as sorbed or bound residues, the pollutants are redistributed in the soil profile as solutes and/or water-liquids immiscible, in gaseous form or adsorbed on colloids and other fine ...

On the Rainfall Infiltration Through a Soil Medium

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1989
A vertical long soil column subject to rainfall filtrating through the upper end of the column has been considered. The mathematical formulation of this physical model, based on the theory of fluid flows in a nonsaturated porous medium, leads to a one-phase, nonlinear parabolic free boundary problem, the free boundary being the wetting front.

Soil as a Storage Medium for Fungi

Mycologia, 1953
SUMMARY1. Of 18 species of fungi stored on loam, 17 remain viable for 1 year, and 2 for as long as 4 years.2. All the fungi that were preserved in soil remained in the original wild or primary state, whereas on agar the dermatophytes, Phoma sp., Phyllosticta sp. and Fusarium sp. became pleomorphic.3.

Mechanics of dynamic penetration into soil medium

Mechanics of Solids, 2010
This paper presents a survey of the results of experimental and theoretical studies in the field of high-speed penetration into soil media, which were obtained in the Institute for Problems in Mechanics, Russian Academy of Sciences. New methods for determining the dynamic parameters of such media are proposed.

The Soil as a Renovating Medium

1982
The old system of disposing waste on people’s own property is less common today. Water is now in many cases the transport medium of these wastes. This discharge of wastes into receiving waters has interfered with the ecological balance in such a way that many streams, lakes or estuaries are now deficient in oxygen.
