The Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) mission radar: A novel conically scanning SAR

2009 IEEE Radar Conference, 2009
The Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) mission is a NASA mission identified by the NRC “decadal survey” to measure both soil moisture and freeze/thaw state from space. The mission will use both active radar and passive radiometer instruments at L-Band.

High Resolution Soil Moisture Product Based on Smap Active-Passive Approach Using Copernicus Sentinel 1 Data

IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018
SMAP project released a new enhanced high-resolution (3km) soil moisture active-passive product. This product is obtained by combining the SMAP radiometer data and the Sentinel-IA and -IB Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. The approach used for this product draws heavily from the heritage SMAP active-passive algorithm.

The Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment 2012 (SMAPVEX12): Prelaunch Calibration and Validation of the SMAP Soil Moisture Algorithms

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2015
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite is scheduled for launch in January 2015. In order to develop robust soil moisture retrieval algorithms that fully exploit the unique capabilities of SMAP, algorithm developers had identified a need for long-duration combined active and passive L-band ...

Landscape freeze/thaw products from Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) radar and radiometer data

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission produced a daily landscape freeze/thaw product (L3_FT_A) at 3-km spatial resolution derived from ascending and descending orbits of SMAP high-resolution L-band (1.4 GHz) radar measurements. Following the loss of the SMAP radar in July 2015, coarser (36-km) footprint passive microwave retrievals from ...

A Combined Active–Passive Soil Moisture Estimation Algorithm With Adaptive Regularization in Support of SMAP

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2015
We present a method to combine same-resolution measurements of active radar and passive radiometer microwave remote sensing to build a framework for soil moisture estimation in support of the Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) mission. A unified active–passive soil moisture estimation algorithm is developed within a global optimization scheme ...

On the maneuvers operational response for NASA's soil moisture active-passive (SMAP) mission

2016 IEEE Aerospace Conference, 2016
The Soil-Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) spacecraft requires various kinds of in-orbit maneuvers over the course of its three-year mission. The types of maneuvers include preplanned commissioning maneuvers to reach its science orbit, regularly executed orbit maintenance maneuvers to overcome drag and other nominally occurring phenomena, as well as (the ...
