Carbohydrates in hot water extracts of soil aggregates as affected by long-term management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Microbial carbohydrates are immediate by-products of microbial metabolism and play an important role in the formation and stabilization of soil structure.

Transcripts enriched in codons that trigger P‐site tRNA‐mediated mRNA decay possess stable mRNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
PTMD codons were first described by Mendel et al. as mediators of an mRNA decay pathway dependent on the human protein CNOT3, homologous to yeast Not5. Our findings confirm that PTMD codons destabilize transcripts; however, unlike in yeast, the human pathway specifically targets and slightly destabilizes primarily stable mRNAs.

Structural and biochemical insights into the thermostable esterase Ta0887 from Thermoplasma acidophilum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, a novel esterase from the thermoacidophilic archaeon Thermoplasma acidophilum was biochemically and structurally characterized. Our results demonstrate that Ta0887 is a highly thermostable esterase that preferentially hydrolyzes p‐nitrophenyl hexanoate and possesses an α‐helical cap domain that likely contributes to its substrate ...

Functional soil microbes drive soil phosphorus fractions in response to nitrogen addition across aggregate levels

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important limiting nutrients for plant productivity in terrestrial ecosystems. As key drivers of P cycling processes, changes in soil microbial diversity and community structure can influence soil P cycling and ...

Exogenous phosphorus compounds interact with nitrogen availability to regulate dynamics of soil inorganic phosphorus fractions in a meadow steppe [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2019
Here we investigated the effects of P compounds (KH2PO4 and Ca(H2PO4)2) with different addition rates of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 kg P ha−1 yr−1 and NH4NO3 addition (0 and 100 kg N ha−1 yr−1) on ...

Soil phosphorus fractions and distributions in estuarine wetlands with different climax vegetation covers in the Yellow River Delta

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
To evaluate the relationship between phosphorus (P) fractions and physicochemical characteristics in soils of estuarine wetlands with different climax vegetation covers, surface 60-cm soil samples were collected in Suaeda heteroptera wetlands (SH ...

Self‐Cleaning Sensor Surfaces for Long‐Term Environmental Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Long‐term use of unattended outdoor sensors without soiling or biofouling is achieved through generation of a micro‐ and nanorough cuvette surface by combing hydrophobic nanoparticles with fluorinated polymers, crosslinked and surface‐attached through CHic chemistry. The coating demonstrates self‐cleaning behavior and prolonged outdoor stability, which

Adsorption/desorption processes dominate the soil P fractions dynamic under long-term N/P addition in a subtropical forest

open access: yesGeoderma
Despite large phosphorus (P) reserves in subtropical forest soils, P limitation can be exacerbated by elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. However, the mechanisms underlying how soil P fraction transformation affects P availability and the key ...

Exploring the enzymatic landscape: distribution and kinetics of hydrolytic enzymes in soil particle-size fractions

open access: yes, 2005
The location of extracellular enzymes within the soil architecture and their association with the various soil components affects their catalytic potential.

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.
