Effect of heavy metal pollution on soil microorganisms: influence of soil physicochemical properties. A systematic review [PDF]

open access: yes
This review examines the complex interaction between heavy metals and soil microorganisms, focusing on five common heavy metals (HM) (chromium -Cr-, copper -Cu-, nickel -Ni-, lead -Pb-, and zinc -Zn-) in polluted areas worldwide.

Cost‐Benefit Analysis of the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in Fertilizer Trade

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), launching 2026, will charge EU importers for embedded carbon emissions, aiming to reduce emissions but raising import costs. Shifts in demand following implementation may reduce carbon emissions, but importers will bear the cost of increased prices.

China’s carbon neutrality agenda unmasks a persistent north-south divide in toxic pollutant reduction

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Here, we combine scenario analysis with machine learning to assess the impact of China’s carbon neutrality policy on the reduction of toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as quantified by their toxic equivalency emissions (EBaPeq).

Biotic reactive oxygen species drive arsenic oxidation in paddy soils

open access: yesEarth Critical Zone
The generation of biotic ROS has increasingly been recognized as a critical process in environmental systems. However, its role in arsenic transformation in paddy soils remains insufficiently elucidated.

An Attention‐Assisted Machine Learning System for Deep Microorganism Image Classification

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
An attention‐assisted DenseNet201 framework was developed for the classification of eight microorganism classes from microscopic images. The proposed model improved classification performance and achieved an accuracy of 87.38%. Advances in microbiology and environmental health fundamentally depend on precise and timely microorganism identification ...

Human‐in‐the‐Loop Swarms: A Bionic Swarm Approach to Real‐World Soil Mapping

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article introduces the “Bionic Swarm,” a novel system that lowers the barriers to real‐world swarm validation by abstracting difficult hardware tasks to app‐guided human agents. We demonstrate the system's utility through the experimental validation of a geotechnical soil‐mapping swarm algorithm and show superior performance to baseline approaches

Inhibited vertical mobility of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter under low-intensity rainfall: role of mineral retention

open access: yesBiochar
Biochar has great potential in the application areas of carbon sequestration and environmental remediation. A significant amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM) may be released from biochar, which is highly reactive and mobile.
