Abstract For 35 New Zealand soil samples of varied origin, estimates of total porosity and macro‐porosity group were compared with measurements of these properties in an endeavour to judge the feasibility of making such estimates as part of the pedological field description. The estimates of total porosity group were

Effects of Drying Treatments on Porosity of Soil Materials
Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1985Abstract The effects of three drying techniques on total porosity and pore size distribution of soil materials were studied by Hg intrusion porosimetry. The three soils investigated had different clay contents (21%, 35%, and 44%), but the clay fraction of each was dominated by montmorillonite.

The relation between soil infiltration and effective porosity in different soils
Agricultural Water Management, 1993Abstract A field study was conducted to examine the relationship between in situ steady state infiltration rate (IR) and some textural and structural soil properties. The textural variables (clay %, silt %, and clay plus silt) showed weak correlations with the IR compared to the structural [total porosity, effective porosity (EP), and bulk density ...

Hydraulic Conductivity Related to Porosity and Swelling of Soil
Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1969Abstract The hydraulic conductivity factor in Darcy's equation for viscous flow is analyzed in terms of a modified Kozeny equation. The modifications include a correction for swelling, and the replacement of the cubic exponent of the porosity term by an exponent varying between 0 and 3.

Optimizing soil moisture for plant production: The significance of soil porosity
2016This publication discusses the processes above, within and below the soil that enable water to move and crops to grow, and is intended to help land users make better use and take better care of these basic resources. The document will contribute to raising awareness of possibilities for better use of rainwater and improved management of soils.
