Long‐Term Analysis of Winter Wheat Yield and Climatic Influences in Ukraine

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Long‐term field data (1968–2024) show that winter wheat yields in central Ukraine increased despite warming, but yield stability declined. Rising temperatures, more frequent soil moisture droughts and shortened winter calm increasingly limit productivity.

Nitrogen Fertilizer Application in Grass–Clover Elevated Nitrate Leaching in the Follow‐on Maize Crop

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background: Grass–clover and silage maize are key for dairy feed production and frequently occur within the same crop rotations. Fertilizer management in grass–clover may leave residual effects that influence both environmental outcomes and the performance of subsequent maize crops.

Effects of Crop Rotation and Hydrogel Application on Soil Biological Properties and Wheat Biomass Production in Drylands

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and aim Conservation agriculture (CA) is rapidly gaining traction to promote sustainable crop production, focusing on minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and strategic crop rotation. Moreover, hydrogel is increasingly being used to improve water retention, including in combination with CA, particularly in water limited ...

Plant Availability of Phosphorus From Sewage Sludge Ash‐Based Fertilizers and Its Relationship to Phosphorus Extractability

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Sewage sludge ash (SSA) is a potential phosphorus (P) source for fertilizers, but untreated SSA (USSA) often shows low plant availability of P. To increase P availability, sodium additives can be applied before sewage sludge incineration or during thermochemical SSA posttreatment, as this leads to the formation of CaNaPO4.

‘The most advanced outpost of cultivation’: palynological evidence for cereal agriculture and population resilience in a marginal upland environment

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Upland farming in Europe is frequently assumed to have been limited and precarious, despite relict spade‐dug ridges providing firm evidence of past crop growing. Direct evidence for crop types in post‑Medieval to Modern (~since 1500 CE) uplands is rare; yet, in Ireland, relict spade‐dug ridges that date to this period are commonly interpreted ...

Managing and visualising geochemical data for tephra correlation with the IntChron Integration Tool

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is now a wealth of glass‐shard geochemical data for volcanic ash (tephra) layers from a wide range of volcanoes and eruptions, providing invaluable datasets for tephrochronology. However, compilation of published data to assess tephra correlations leads to large files and requires careful management.
