Seismic waves propagating through the soil impinge upon structures founded on the soil surface or embedded into it. Displacements are then produced both in the structure and in the soil. The mutual dependency of the displacements is called soil-structure interaction, abbreviated as SSI. Consequently, the motion occurring at the base of the structure is

This chapter addresses the interaction between the structure and its foundation. It begins with a seldom covered problem: rocking of the structure on the foundation and possible “lift-off” that would act as stress reliever. Different techniques to model this problem are outlined.

The response of a structure under seismic excitations is affected by interactions between three connected structural parts: the structure, the foundation, and the soil underlying and surrounding the foundation [290].

This chapter introduces the concept of soil–structure interaction and summarises the methods available for predicting the behaviour of foundations and substructural elements constructed within a soil mass. An overview of the most frequently used soil models that are incorporated into this type of calculation are discussed, with recommendations on the ...

Dynamic structure-soil-structure interaction
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1973abstract A study is made of the dynamic interaction, through the soil, between two parallel infinite shear walls placed on rigid foundations. The steady-state response of both structures for a vertically incident SH wave is obtained and compared with the corresponding values resulting from consideration of only one structure.

Usually in the seismic design of ordinary building, soil structure interaction is neglected and the dynamic response of the structure is evaluated under the assumption of a fixed based response. However during seismic loading the soil undergoes deformations which are imposed to the foundation, the question naturally arises of knowing if the motion in ...

Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction
Journal of the Structural Division, 1972THE EFFECT OF SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION ON THE STRUCTURAL RESPONSE TO EARTHQUAKE MOTION IS ANALYZED. THE STRUCTURE IS MODELED BY A ONE DEGREE-OF-FREEDOM SYSTEM RESTING ON AN ELASTIC HALF SPACE. THE SOIL IS THEN APPROXIMATED BY SIMPLE MASS-SPRING DASHPOT SYSTEMS USING THE SOLUTIONS OBTAINED BY BYCROFT FOR THE SOIL COMPLIANCES.

Soil structure interaction in poroelastic soils
2015This thesis presents an investigation of the effects of water saturation on the effective excitation and system response during building-foundation-soil interaction, using a simple theoretical model. The model consists of a shear wall supported by a rigid circular foundation embedded in a homogenous and isotropic poroelastic half-space.
