Influence of Soil Suction on Trench Stability
2007A research project on the stability of temporary trenches in unsaturated soil is carried out in Belgium. The main objective of the project is to evaluate the seasonal variations of suction in the soil and to quantify the consequences of these suction variations on trench stability.

A suction‐potential model based on the diffusion equation is proposed whereby the suction is predicted at all times and depths in terms of a parameter K and the initial values of suction β0 The model shows that the suction ratio decays exponentially with time.

Hydromechanical behaviour of expansive soils with different suctions and suction histories
Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2016This paper presents a number of experimental results of suction-controlled triaxial tests on a compacted weakly expansive soil with different suctions and suction histories. In terms of suction control methods, the high suction level (from 3.29 to 38 MPa) was realized by the vapor equilibrium technique and the low suction level (from 0 to 800 kPa) was

Effects of soil suction on dilatancy of an unsaturated soil
2005There has been a growing interest in studying and modelling unsaturated soil behaviour over the last 15 years. It is generally believed that soil suction affects dilatancy of unsaturated soils and some suction-dependant dilatancy relationships are assumed in many flow rules of existing elasto-plastic models. However, limited laboratory data reported in

Measurement of soil suction using soil's resistivity
2009During several years, the analyses of geotechnical problems have been dominated by solutions developed in the classical soil mechanics where the soil is considered completely saturated or dry, conditions that make the analyses less complicated. However, in many geotechnical problems, the engineer has to deal with unsaturated soils which properties are ...

Temperature Effects on Soil Suction for Compacted Clay Soils
Advanced Materials Research, 2013An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of temperature, compaction water content, and compaction efforts on soil suction of two expansive subgrade soils. For this purpose, two expansive soils were statically compacted at target water contents ranging from 5% to 20%.

Compressibility according to compacted soil suction
2011 International Conference on Electric Technology and Civil Engineering (ICETCE), 2011Compacted soils are widely used in geotechnical engineering. To ensure the stability of the structures involving compacted soils, it is essential to well understand the volume change behavior which depends on unsaturated soil mechanical parameters which are highly variable both in time and space because they depend on soil structure and soil hydrous ...

Methodology for determination of osmotic suction of soils
Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2006Soil suction constitutes of the matric suction and the osmotic suction. Several studies have been conducted and reported by researchers that reveal the importance of the matric suction on unsaturated soil properties. However, not many efforts have been made to develop methodologies that can be employed for measuring osmotic suction of the soil and to ...

Soil Suction Measurements by Filter Paper
Expansive Clay Soils and Vegetative Influence on Shallow Foundations, 2001This paper reports on an evaluation of wetting and drying filter paper suction calibration and soil total and matric suction measurement techniques of filter paper method. Calibration of the method was investigated by constructing two calibration curves; one by using the process of wetting the filter papers through vapor flow and the other by using the

Osmotic Suction in Unsaturated Soil Mechanics
Unsaturated Soils 2006, 2006Experimental research was conducted to evaluate the effects of salt content and osmotic suction on suction measurements, moisture retention, and shrinkage behavior of a natural compacted clay soil. Results are presented for: (1) soil water characteristic curves (SWCCs) in terms of matric, total, and osmotic suction, and (2) unconfined shrinkage tests ...
