Suitability of slightly saline irrigation for alleviating drought stress in taro and yam in Tonga: Implications for climate‐resilient Pacific cropping systems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
There is an increasing risk of drought and salinisation of soil and groundwater globally, including in Pacific Island countries such as Tonga. Irrigating crops with slightly saline water, such as that produced by emerging desalination technologies, could help to alleviate droughts.

Rainfall-induced differential settlements of foundations on heterogeneous unsaturated soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study stochastically investigates the rainfall-induced differential settlement of a centrally loaded, rigid strip foundation on an unsaturated soil with spatially varying values of either preconsolidation stress or porosity.

Bacillus thuringiensis and its pest control potential as endophyte

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) systemically colonizes tomato plants as endophyte, inducing midgut damage, fitness reduction and immune suppression in Spodoptera littoralis larvae feeding on Bt‐colonized leaves. The immune suppression enhances the susceptibility to Bt treatments, allowing a synergistic dual use of Bt commercial formulations, by combined ...

An experimental study of the water-holding and strength characteristics of unsaturated canal embankment soils in the South-to-North water diversion project

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
The water-holding and strength characteristics of unsaturated expansive soil and modified soil in a high-fill canal embankment along the central line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project were investigated using a pressure plate apparatus and a ...

Rhizobacteria regulate colonising Sitobion avenae aphid populations through induced host resistance and alter plant volatiles promoting early parasitoid recruitment on barley (Hordeum vulgare)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Rhizobacterial inoculation of barley reduced Sitobion avenae populations by inducing plant resistance and modifying volatiles that attracted parasitoid wasps earlier, enhancing both bottom‐up and top‐down pest control. Abstract BACKGROUND Soil rhizobacteria can enhance crop resistance to insect herbivores and influence higher trophic interactions ...

Analyses of the Suction Anchor–Sandy Soil Interactions under Slidable Pulling Action Using DEM-FEM Coupling Method: The Interface Friction Effect

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The microscale mechanisms underlying the suction anchor–sandy soil interaction under slidable pulling actions of mooring lines remain poorly understood.

Seasonal influence on cone penetration test: An unsaturated soil site example

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2019
Interpretation of electric cone penetration test (CPT) based pore water pressure measurement (CPTu) is well established for soils with behavior that follows classical soil mechanics.

Leaf penetration by endophytic Metarhizium brunneum enables infection of Phthorimaea absoluta in tomato mines while inducing the crop defense system

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Spraying Metarhizium brunneum on tomato plants controls heterogeneous and upcoming Phthorimaea absoluta populations by infecting larvae within mines and priming plant induced systemic defences. Abstract BACKGROUND The endophytic entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum Petch EAMa 01/58‐Su shows strong potential for managing Phthorimaea absoluta, a ...

Research on Vertical Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Suction Pile of Subsea Manifold

open access: yesShiyou jixie, 2020
To understand the influenced range of the soil around the suction pile under the vertical load and address the calculation problem of the vertical bearing capacity of the suction pile, theoretical formula calculation and finite element simulation are ...

Unfrozen Water Content of Frozen Soils and Soil Moisture Suction

open access: yesGéotechnique, 1964
Synopsis The unfrozen water content of various soils has been measured by calorimeter. The suction-moisture content characteristics of the same soils were also determined at room temperature, with conventional pressure plate and pressure membrane apparatus.
