Effects of Freezing on Soil Temperature, Freezing Front Propagation and Moisture Redistribution in Peat: Laboratory Investigations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
There are not many studies that report water movement in freezing peat. Soil column studies under controlled laboratory settings can help isolate and understand the effects of different factors controlling freezing of the active layer in organic covered ...

Heteroatom‐Engineering Promoted Co9S8 Bi‐functional Electrocatalyst for Hydrazine‐Assisted Hydrogen Production at Industrial Current Density

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Fe and P co‐doped Co9S8 nanocorals (Fe, P‐Co9S8) are successfully synthesized by a heteroatom engineering strategy, which exhibit outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR).

Spatially distributed water-balance and meteorological data from the Wolverton catchment, Sequoia National Park, California [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Accurate water-balance measurements in the seasonal, snow-dominated Sierra Nevada are important for forest and downstream water management. However, few sites in the southern Sierra offer detailed records of the spatial and temporal patterns of snowpack ...

Mimicking Block Copolymer Self‐Assembly with One‐Pot Synthesized Polyphosphoester Gradient Copolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Degradable Polyphosphoester (PPE) gradient copolymers (GCPs) are synthesized via one‐pot copolymerization. We show that GCPs self‐assemble into nanostructures like polymersomes, effectively mimicking the behavior of traditional BCPs. The gradient strength is key, with softer gradients favoring micelles.

Changes in soil water content and lateral flow exert large effects on soil thermal dynamics across Alaskan landscapes

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Both lateral surface and subsurface water flow affect soil moisture dynamics, yet most land surface models only solve subsurface water movement vertically.

Sustainable Catalyst‐Free PLG Networks: Recyclability, Biodegradability, and Functional Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A catalyst‐additive free covalent adaptable network is developed from star‐shaped poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide) cross‐linked with pyromellitic dianhydride, enabling internal carboxylic acid‐driven transesterification. The resulting biodegradable network exhibits mechanical robustness (Young's modulus ≈1.6 GPa), complete recyclability, rapid biodegradation

The role of ground heat flux in estimating evapotranspiration by the Penman-Monteith method on mountain meadow

open access: yesSoil and Water Research
Ground heat flux (G) is often an overlooked component of the surface energy balance, and its accurate determination remains challenging. In the present study, the accuracy of various G estimation methods is examined using long-term measurements from the ...

Soil temperature extrema recovery rates after precipitation cooling [PDF]

open access: yes
From a one dimensional view of temperature alone variations at the Earth's surface manifest themselves in two cyclic patterns of diurnal and annual periods, due principally to the effects of diurnal and seasonal changes in solar heating as well as gains ...

Metal–Organic Frameworks for Gaseous Pollutant Management: From Capture to Neutralization and Reutilization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review maps how MOFs can manage hazardous gases by combining adsorption, neutralization, and reutilization, enabling sustainable air‐pollution control. Covering chemical warfare agent simulants, SO2, NOx, NH3, H2S, and volatile organic compounds, it highlights structure‐guided strategies that boost selectivity, water tolerance, and cycling ...

Mullahingamise sesoonne dünaamika kuusikute aegreas / Seasonal dynamics of soil respiration in a chronosequence of the Norway spruce stands

open access: yesMetsanduslikud Uurimused, 2011
Soil respiration resulting from microbial and root respiration is a major component of the forest carbon cycle. The response of soil respiration to varying environmental factors (soil temperature and soil moisture) was studied in a Norway spruce ...
