Modeling of evolving textures using granulometries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This chapter describes a statistical approach to classification of dynamic texture images, called parallel evolution functions (PEFs). Traditional classification methods predict texture class membership using comparisons with a finite set of predefined ...

Near infrared spectroscopy as an easy and precise method to estimate soil texture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Soil texture is beside soil organic matter the most fundamental soil parameter affecting most biological, chemical, physical soil properties. However, conventional laboratory analyses of soil texture are time-consuming and expensive, calling for ...

Topography constrains the climatic response of treeline migration in Taiwan's subalpine forests

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Treelines are moving upslope, but the rates and drivers differ among different regions, globally. Many studies have examined the relationship between treeline movement and climate change, particularly rising temperature, while the role of topographical factors has received much less attention, despite the longstanding recognition of its importance.

Correlation between species composition and soil properties in the pastures of Plana de Vic (Catalonia, Spain) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The correlation between the species composition of pasture communities and soil properties in Plana de Vic has been studied using two multivariate methods, Correspondence Analysis (CA) for the vegetation data and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for ...

Fish Scales: A Multifunctional Biomaterial from Nature

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Fish scales demonstrate nature's solution to impact protection through overlapping multilayered architecture. This biological design combines mineralized surfaces with collagen networks to achieve both flexibility and fracture resistance. The structural principles inspire advanced protective materials and biomedical implants, where damage tolerance ...

Closing the Loop in Agrivoltaics: A Radiative Cooling Coating for Synergistic Self‐Cleaning and Water Harvesting

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
A nanostructured photonic‐thermal coating enables radiative‐cooling‐induced condensation and water harvesting, establishing a self‐sustaining agrivoltaics microclimate loop that transforms PV panels into active climate regulators. The integration of photovoltaic (PV) panels into agricultural landscapes (i.e., agrivoltaics) offers a promising path for ...

Numerical study of the effect of soil texture and land use distribution on the convective precipitation

open access: yesHungarian Geographical Bulletin, 2015
In this study the Weather Research Model is used to analyse the sensitivity of convection to soil texture and land use distribution based on a heavy precipitation event.

Biomass‐derived hydrochars as eco‐friendly adsorbents for wastewater treatment applications

open access: yesEnvironmental Progress &Sustainable Energy, EarlyView.
Abstract Emerging organic pollutants (EOPs), such as diethyl phthalate (DEP), bisphenol A (BPA), and methylene blue (MB), are only partially removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants. This study assesses hydrochars produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of spruce bark (SB), vine shoots (VSs), and wheat straw (WSs) for removing three ...

Numerical Investigation of Methane Transport Within and Around Evolving Cracks

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
A validated model shows that natural gas leakage induces soil deformation and forms three key cracks. When diffusion is low, methane moves mainly along the primary crack, demonstrating how natural fractures reshape pathways and significantly enhance methane migration.
