Abstract To gain more insight into the hydrological behaviour of coarse‐textured soils, the physical properties of artificially created soil mixtures with different texture were determined. The mixtures were prepared according to the specifications of the United States Golf Association (USGA) for constructing putting greens.

Soil textural classification by a photosedimentation method
Applied Optics, 1998A photosedimentation technique is used to analyze the size composition of soil samples. The number and size of the particles are determined, respectively, by the Stokes formula and the Beer-Lambert law, measuring time-of-flight and laser light attenuation simultaneously and hence evaluating solution turbidity.

One of the most important properties of soils is soil texture. Soil texture is defined as a collection of soil particles of different sizes i.e. grain size. Particle analysis is a laboratory process that causes material dislocation into individual particles. The methods for the actual soil grain size analyses are based on the standard.

The soil’s composition and texture provide a physical framework and largely determine its capacity to supply water and nutrients and to develop a soil structure resistant to erosion. The finest fractions, having the largest surface area, are the most active.
