Soils and Soil Solutions

1997
Soils are often extremely heterogeneous in their structure and chemical composition. A soil not only consists of solid matter of mineral or organic origin but also contains numerous pores, which altogether form a cavity system that is connected to the atmosphere.

The soils

Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, 1982
During the summer of 1980, excavations at Shaugh Moor were extended to the Saddlesborough reave, it was hoped to establish the nature of the land boundaries which characterise this part of Dartmoor. In this area the reave runs downslope in a south-easterly direction away from Saddlesborough and it was investigated by a number of sections at ...

Soil Colloids and the Soil Solution

1991
In the companion volume to this book (‘Soil Colloids and Their Associations in Aggregates’; M.F. De Boodt, M.H.B. Hayes, and A. Herbillon, eds.; Plenum Press, New York and London, 1990), attention was focused on the composition and structures of the colloidal components of soils and on the associations in aggregates between these and the other ...

SOIL EXTRACT IN SOIL MICROBIOLOGY

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1958
Soil extract contains unidentified growth factors not present in other materials. In this study the extract was considered critically in so far as various treatments affect numbers of bacteria developing on soil-extract agar. Dilution of the extract to 1/10th concentration produced lower counts in most soils.

Soil data for crop-soil models

1993
Systems approaches for agricultural development can be realized at different levels of detail which are associated with different data needs. For soils five levels were defined, ranging from farmer’s knowledge and expert systems to use of complex simulation models.

Soil Fauna and Soil Microflora as Possible Indicators of Soil Pollution

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 1983
Research on biological indicators of soil pollution is hampered by soil variability and temporal and spatial fluctuations of numbers of soil animals. These characters on the other hand promote a high biological diversity in the soil. A high diversity combined with persistent soil pollutants increases the chance to select good indicators.

Soils and Soil Mixtures

1978
Plants can be supported and grown in many types of materials. In fact, observation will show that if a root can penetrate the mixture, then most plants can survive. The crux comes with the question of how well the plant grows in the mixture. Once beyond the question of mere survival, the problem of soils and root substrates becomes complex.

Soil Biology: Soil Animals and Soil Acidity

1994
The role of soil animals is in general poorly known. Several studies have shown that soil fauna may accelerate the decomposition rate and contribute to the release of plant nutrients, but there is a need for more exact quantitative knowledge in this field (e.g., Anderson et al.

Soil Biology: Soil Microflora and Soil Acidity

1994
The low content of inorganic nutrients in forest soils makes the microbial activities in this ecosystem an important factor in regulating the amounts of available nutrients for the growth of trees. In such soils most of the fine roots of forest trees will be in an intimate symbiotic association with the mycelia of different fungi, thus greatly ...

Soils and Soil Biota

1998
Abstract Soils are an integral part of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Jenny (1941) suggested that soil formation results from multiple factors: climate, organisms, topography, and parent material, all interacting over time. In the tallgrass prairie-soils ecosystem, the prairie vegetation has exerted great influence on soil formation ...
