Sol–gel preparation of borosilicates
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 1999Abstract Polyborosiloxanes as a precursor for borosilicate gel plates and fibers were obtained by the reaction of silicic acid and boron tri- n -butoxide followed by alkoxylation with 1-butanol. Gel fibers were prepared after concentration and aging of the polymer solutions with molar ratios of silicic acid to boron tri- n -butoxide of 7/3–2/3 ...

Immunoassays in Sol-Gel Matrices
Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology, 1996Parasites have been encapsulated within sol-gel silica matrices. Thermoporometry measurements show that the pore size depends strongly on experimental conditions. Pores as large as 100 A in diameter can be obtained, allowing the diffusion of large biomolecules such as immunoglobulins.

Sol-gel processes show many promises for the development of low-loss, high-performance glass integrated optical circuits. Special attention is being paid to the preparation of composite glass films, where the properties of organic or inorganic dopant compounds included in the glass matrix are fully exploited.

Sol-gel derived films can be deposited on metals to improve their resistance to oxidation and corrosion or to modify their surface properties. However, practical applications are limited by problems intrinsic to sol-gel processing or specific of coating/metal systems.

Sol-gel Chemistry in Medicinal Science
Current Medicinal Chemistry, 2006The sol-gel process is an inorganic polymerization process taking place in mild conditions, allowing the association of mineral phases with organic or biological systems. The possibility to immobilize drugs, enzymes, antibodies and even whole cells without loss of their biological activity led to the development of diagnostic tools, drug delivery ...

The sol–gel-based modification of wood introduces chemical substances into wood in order to improve its characteristics and impart new properties. It stabilizes dimensions of wood (timber) components, increases its strength and resistance to water, and reduces cracking. Many sol–gel-based impregnations aim to protect against wood rot and fire.

Sol‐Gel Chemistry for Carbon Dots
The Chemical Record, 2018AbstractCarbon dots are an emerging class of carbon‐based nanostructures produced by low‐cost raw materials which exhibit a widely‐tunable photoluminescence and a high quantum yield. The potential of these nanomaterials as a substitute of semiconductor quantum dots in optoelectronics and biomedicine is very high, however they need a customized ...

The sintering of films differs from that of bulk gels in several ways. The initial state of a film is generally denser and less crosslinked than a bulk gel made from the same sol, and these factors enhance the densification rate of the film. The substrate constrains the shrinkage of the film, leading to high stresses that retard densification and can ...

Modeling the sol-gel transition
Computing in Science & Engineering, 2003Of particular interest is the sol-gel transition, in which a viscous fluid (the sol) transforms into an elastic disordered solid (the gel) by creating in the liquid phase a macroscopic structure capable of bearing stresses. This article first presents the theoretical approaches to the gelation transition, reviews scaling predictions and numerical ...
