Tumor formation in hybrids between Solanum lycopersicum and S. habrochaites

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Biotechnology, 2013
Genetic tumors are neoplastic growths that arise spontaneously in particular genotypes in plants. In the present study, we observed the occurrence of tumors in interspecific hybrids between Solanum lycopersicum L. and Solanum habrochaites S. Knapp and D. M. Spooner.

Characterization of 15-cis-ζ-Carotene Isomerase Z-ISO in Cultivated and Wild Tomato Species Differing in Ripe Fruit Pigmentation

open access: yesPlants, 2021
Isomerization of 9,15,9′-tri-cis-ζ-carotene mediated by 15-cis-ζ-carotene isomerase Z-ISO is a critical step in the biosynthesis of carotenoids, which define fruit color.

Phylogenomic and super-pangenome analyses unveil the genetic landscape of tomato evolution and domestication. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Biotechnol J
Summary The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a principal fruit crop, exhibits significant genetic diversity shaped by domestication and breeding. Analysis of the gene‐based super‐pangenome, a catalogue of all genes across diverse genome‐sequenced tomatoes, has not yet been fully explored.

Mating system transitions in Solanum habrochaites impact interactions between populations and species [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2016
Summary In plants, transitions in mating system from outcrossing to self‐fertilization are common; however, the impact of these transitions on interspecific and interpopulation reproductive barriers is not fully understood. We examined the consequences of mating system transition for reproductive barriers in 19 populations of the wild tomato species ...

The NLR Protein Encoded by the Resistance Gene Ty-2 Is Triggered by the Replication-Associated Protein Rep/C1 of Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
The whitefly-transmitted tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) is one of the most destructive viral pathogens of cultivated tomato. To combat TYLCV, resistance gene Ty-2 has been introduced into cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from wild tomato ...

Inheritance of resistance to Phytophthora infestans (Peronosporales, Pythiaceae) in a new source of resistance in tomato (Solanum sp. (formerly Lycopersicon sp.), Solanales, Solanaceae)

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2008
In Brazil, no commercial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. formerly Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) varieties are available which are resistant to the late blight, one of the most important tomato diseases, produced by the phytopathogenic oomycete ...

Breeding tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses

open access: yesJournal of Horticultural Sciences, 2017
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop cultivated in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Low productivity in India is due to occurrence of both biotic and abiotic stresses.

The structure and allelic diversity of the self-incompatibility locus (S-locus) in diploid potatoes inferred from genome sequences and transcriptome data from styles and pollen. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Genome
Abstract Gametophytic self‐incompatibility (GSI) is a reproductive strategy to prevent inbreeding and promote outcrossing. Studies to understand molecular and evolutionary aspects of the self‐compatibility (SC)/self‐incompatibility (SI) system in the Solanaceae have been conducted using several genera including Petunia Juss., Nicotiana L., and Solanum ...

A reference genome of Solanum habrochaites

open access: yes, 2022
Related species have been used in tomato breeding as sources of resistance to many diseases. Genetic maps based on progenies issued from interspecific crosses highlighted chromosomal rearrangements between the cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and related species.

Pervasive antagonistic interactions among hybrid incompatibility loci. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2017
Species barriers, expressed as hybrid inviability and sterility, are often due to epistatic interactions between divergent loci from two lineages. Theoretical models indicate that the strength, direction, and complexity of these genetic interactions can ...
