The Threatened Species No‐Go Mapping Tool: An online open‐access land‐use decision support tool that identifies areas of importance for highly sensitive species of conservation concern

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 3, July–September 2025.
Range‐restricted, endemic species face an elevated risk of extinction and ensuring their remaining habitat remains protected from development is paramount. Here, we introduce an open‐access, online tool that maps the locations of the most imperilled of species within South Africa.

Habitat heterogeneity from lidar and hyperspectral data: Implications for bird guilds and restoration management of coal mines

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 7, Page 1659-1673, July 2025.
This study underscores the need to design a mosaic of habitats with complex vertical structures, emphasising the critical role of senescent vegetation and unaltered terrain features in supporting biodiversity. Finally, it provides evidence that integrating habitat heterogeneity metrics derived from airborne remote sensing data into restoration success ...

Analysis of the complex role of trees in street canyons using a large‐eddy simulation model

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 151, Issue 769, April 2025 Part B.
Our large‐eddy simulations with high spatial resolution (down to 1 m) show a significant improvement in thermal comfort in shaded areas beneath trees during the hottest part of the day and just after sunset. However, they also highlight a drawback: in narrower streets, PM10 concentrations more than doubled compared with areas without trees, suggesting ...
