The Solar Corona

2003
The solar corona is an extremely hot (106 K or about 0.1 keV), almost fully ionised plasma which extends from a few thousand km above the Sun’s visible surface or photosphere (6000 K) to where it freely expands into the solar system as the solar wind.

Solar corona heating

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2000
Despite of the large number of models and mechanisms proposed in the literature, the problem of the heating of the solar corona is still unsolved and represents one of the challenge of solar physics. In this context, a basic question to be addressed by any viable theoretical model concerns understanding the mechanism capable of transferring ...

The Solar Corona

Nature, 1942
THE difficulties which have so far been experienced in working out a physical theory of the solar corona (vide Rosseland, “Theoretical Astrophysics”, Chap. 14) have apparently been increased by the discovery of Grotrian and Edlen that many of these lines are due to forbidden transitions of highly stripped atoms of iron and nickel having the ...

Holy Solar Corona

Science News, 1976
The connection between things that happen on the sun and things that happen on the earth has been manifest for so long that the sun has often been worshipped as a god with power over terrestrial destinies. Since the dawning of the scientific age, the connections have been regarded as more physical than supernatural, but a number of them have been long ...
