Energy and Mass Transport Associated with Impulsive Spicular Flows in Solar Coronal Holes
How the solar atmosphere is heated from a temperature of about 5000 to 6000 K in the lower atmosphere to about 1–2 MK in the corona has challenged the astrophysical community for nearly 80 yr.

Solar Disappearing Filament Inside a Coronal Hole
Based on Yohkoh/SXT, SOHO/EIT images and movies, as well as on Hα, He I 10830 A heliograms and other relevant data, we analyze an event of 1999 December 28, which is interesting in at least two aspects. (1) A major horseshoe-shaped Hα filament appeared to be located within a large transequatorial coronal hole (CH) in the eastern hemisphere.

Solar activity during Skylab: Its distribution and relation to coronal holes [PDF]
Solar active regions observed during the period of Skylab observations (May 1973-February 1974) were examined for properties that varied systematically with location on the sun, particularly with respect to the location of coronal holes. Approximately 90

Solar cycle evolution of the solar wind in three dimensions [PDF]
Measurements of the solar wind speed both in and out of the ecliptic are presented for 1971-82. The speed estimates, which were made with the interplanetary scintillation system at UC San Diego, have been compared to in situ for large, slowly evolving ...

A turbulence-driven model for heating and acceleration of the fast wind in coronal holes [PDF]
A model is presented for generation of fast solar wind in coronal holes, relying on heating that is dominated by turbulent dissipation of MHD fluctuations transported upwards in the solar atmosphere.

Abstract The May 2024 superstorm, as the most intense geomagnetic storm since 2003, caused a variety of disturbances in the magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐thermosphere system. This study investigates the long‐lasting electron density depletion in the polar region and the underlying ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling, based on a comprehensive set of ...

Micro-Sigmoids as Progenitors of Coronal Jets - Is Eruptive Activity Self-Similarly Multi-Scaled?
Observations from the X-ray telescope (XRT) on Hinode are used to study the nature of X-ray bright points, sources of coronal jets. Several jet events in the coronal holes are found to erupt from small-scale, S-shaped bright regions.

Alfvén Waves from Interchange Reconnection at Separators as a Possible Source of Switchbacks
Parker Solar Probe has observed Alfvénic fluctuations of amplitude large enough to occasionally reverse the local magnetic field direction—a phenomenon known as a switchback. Some have attributed switchbacks to reconnection in the low corona between open

New views on the emission and structure of the solar transition region
The Sun is the only star that we can spatially resolve and it can be regarded as a fundamental plasma laboratory of astrophysics. The solar transition region (TR), the layer between the solar chromosphere and corona, plays an important role in solar wind
