Prediction of Solar Cycle Maximum Using Solar Cycle Lengths

Solar Physics, 2008
If the rise time RT, fall time FT, and total time TT (i.e., RT+FT) of a solar cycle are compared against the maximum amplitude Rz(max ) for the following cycle, then only the association between TT and Rz(max ) is inferred to be well anticorrelated, inferring that the larger (smaller) the value of Rz(max ) for the following cycle, the shorter (longer ...

Solar Cycle Predictions (Invited Review)

Solar Physics, 2012
Solar cycle predictions are needed to plan long-term space missions, just as weather predictions are needed to plan the launch. Fleets of satellites circle the Earth collecting many types of science data, protecting astronauts, and relaying information. All of these satellites are sensitive at some level to solar cycle effects.

Solar cycle 23 prediction update

Advances in Space Research, 2000
The smoothed sunspot number (SSN) and the planetary index (Ap) data for the period 1932 to 1998 are used to derive a relationship to compute future smoothed solar cycle maxima. We show that the amplitudes of the last six cycles (17 to 22) bear a linear correlation with the annual mean values of Ap one year into the new cycle.

Nonlinear Prediction of Solar Cycle 25

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2018
AbstractSolar activity is a chaotic process and there are various approximations to forecast its long term and short term variations. But there is no prediction method that predicts the solar activity exactly. In this study, a nonlinear prediction approach was applied to international sunspot numbers and performance of predictions was tested for the ...

Can the Solar Cycle Amplitude Be Predicted Using the Preceding Solar Cycle Length?

Solar Physics, 2008
In this work, the evolution of the relationship between Solar Cycle Length of solar cycle n (SCLn) and Solar Cycle Amplitude of the solar cycle n+1 (SCAn+1) is studied by using the RZ and RG sunspot numbers. We conclude that this relationship is only strongly significant in a statistical sense during the first half of the historical record of RZ ...

Solar activity cycle - History and predictions

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1989
The solar output of short-wavelength radiation, solar wind, and energetic particles depends strongly on the solar cycle. These energy outputs from the sun control conditions in the interplanetary medium and in the terrestrial magnetosphere and upper atmosphere.

A prediction of the solar cycle 25

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2018
AbstractHere we report our recent prediction of the solar cycle 25 based on a newly developed scheme, which is used to investigate the predictability of the solar cycle over one cycle. The scheme is a combination of the empirical properties of solar cycles and a surface flux transport model to get the possible axial dipole moment evolution at a few ...

Solar Cycle Predictions based on Solar Activity at Different Solar Latitudes

Solar Physics, 2007
Many methods of predictions of sunspot maximum number use data before or at the preceding sunspot minimum to correlate with the following sunspot maximum of the same cycle, which occurs a few years later. Kane and Trivedi (Solar Phys. 68, 135, 1980) found that correlations of Rz(max) (the maximum in the 12-month running means of sunspot number Rz) with
