Solar distillation in Chile

Desalination, 1975
Abstract A brief historic description is given of solar distillation in Chile and the famous plant built by Carlos Wilson in 1872 and its reconstruction. “Natural distillation” caused by the coastal fog (“camanchaca”) and its uses are discussed. The two types of direct distillation solar equipment: (1) stills with an evaporation wick and (2) basin ...

Solar distillation : the solar-driven case

Desalination, 1981
Abstract This paper considers distillation systems where all the plant's thermal energy requirements are provided by solar energy. Fairly small capacity plants are considered operating in remote arid regions. Such systems consist of solar collectors and thermal storage coupled to a distillation plant.

Solar distillation: the solar-assisted case

Desalination, 1981
Abstract We consider here the case where a solar collector system, without storage, is linked to an otherwise stand-alone, fuel-driven desalination plant. The choices involved in selecting the type of solar collector and the design constrains on other components of the thermal source loop are outlined. A rationale is outlined for determining the most

Automation Control Targeting of a Solar Distiller

2012 Brazilian Symposium on Computing System Engineering, 2012
This study aimed at planning, building and running an automatic solar distiller, whose function is to direct the mirror still in the position that there is a maximum brightness of the capture of the sunlight. The distiller was designed in the style of a cylindrical parabolic solar concentrator developed sheet steel, coated mirrors, modeled on a ...

Nocturnal production of solar distillers

Solar Energy, 1966
Abstract The accumulated production of the deep-basin solar still and that of the tilted-tray solar still with longitudinal baffles are compared. The comparisons show that evaporation in the deep-basin still continues during the entire 24-hour period while the tilted-tray still ceases to produce a relatively short time after sunset.

An Introduction to Solar Distillation

Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division, 1958
This paper presents a study and the results of experiments on the production of potable water with solar energy on three pilot plants in Iran. The effects of geographical location, the size and shape of plants, together with descriptions of various plants and methods of distillation, on the actual production of the pilot plants are explained in the ...

Seawater Distillation by Solar Energy

Desalination, 1987
Abstract This paper presents the results obtained from a solar desalination plant during one year of operation (1985). The experimental results are compared with that of a computer simulation developed for the purpose of predicting the performance of the plant.

Present status of solar distillation

Solar Energy, 2003
In this communication an attempt has been made to review, in brief, work on solar distillation, its present status in the world today and its future perspective. The review also includes water sources, water demand, availability of potable water and purification methods including the state of art and historical background.
