Solar Energetic Particles: An Overview
2006This paper presents an overview of what we know about energetic particles from the sun, discusses where progress still needs to be made, and briefly enumerates what steps need to be taken next in order to better understand how and where solar electrons and ions are accelerated to high energies.

Classification of solar energetic particles
Advances in Space Research, 2002While it is now common to refer to a solar event as “impulsive” or “gradual,” the classification of the event can be difficult in practice and does not completely clarify the characteristics of solar energetic particles. In particular, a single event can produce multiple particle populations with distinct physical properties.

Solar energetic particles: Is there time to hide?
Radiation Measurements, 1999In the large solar energetic particle (SEP) events that constitute a serious radiation hazard, particles are accelerated at shock waves driven out from the Sun by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). A self-regulating mechanism of wave formation by the streaming particles limits SEP intensities early in the event. Hazardous intensities do not occur until the

Solar energetic particle composition
2006Over the last ∼10 years, advanced instrumentation onboard several spacecraft (e.g., WIND, SAMPEX, SOHO, and ACE), extended our ability to explore energy spectra, elemental, isotopic, and ionic charge composition of solar energetic particle (SEP) events in a wide energy range from ∼10 keV/nuc to ∼100 MeV/nuc.

Propagation of Energetic Solar Particles
1985In this Section we present some observational data on energetic particles accelerated on the Sun; these data are required for constructing models of particle propagation in interplanetary space. The data presented are only basic and not totally complete.

Solar Energetic Particle Isotopic Composition
1998We discuss isotopic abundance measurements of heavy (6 ≤ Z ≤ 14) solar energetic particles with energies from ∼15 to 70 MeV/nucleon, focusing on new measurements made on SAMPEX during two large solar particle events in late 1992. These measurements are corrected for charge/mass dependent acceleration effects to obtain estimates of coronal isotopic ...
