Theory of Solar Irradiance Variations

Space Science Reviews, 2000
The theory of stellar structure can be used to identify the most plausible mechanisms for the irradiance variations associated with the solar cycle. Changes in surface emissivity, i.e. the reduced cooling in spots and enhanced emission by small scale magnetic fields, are the most effective mechanisms and account for most of the observed variation.

Synthetic Solar Irradiance

2021
Synthetic Solar Irradiance: Modeling Solar Data is the first book to cover the principles and methods of this emerging field. Filling a void in the literature, this timely book is edited by one of the world's premiere authorities on synthetic solar irradiance with contributions from other leading experts.

Solar indices and solar u.v.-irradiances

Planetary and Space Science, 1983
Abstract Solar radio fluxes, Zurich relative sunspot number R z , and Solar Call plage indexes daily values for the period 1957–1980 are analyzed in order to test the stability of the series with respect to time and solar activity. It is found that between the series of the 3,8 and 10 cm radio fluxes and the series of R z no significant ...

Solar irradiance variations and solar activity

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1982
A mean value for the 1 AU total solar irradiance of 1368.2 W/m2 and a downward trend of 0.05% per year were derived from measurements by the Active Cavity Radiometer Irradiance Monitor (ACRIM) experiment on the Solar Maximum Mission during 1980. Distinct temporary solar irradiance decreases associated with solar activity maxima were observed with a ...

Solar irradiance monitor

Renewable Energy, 1993
Abstract The data on the intensity distribution of solar radiation is essential for the designer to size solar energy systems, required for specific applications. The solar irradiance monitor has been developed to measure and record solar irradiance data from morning to evening at intervals of 1 min without the presence of a technician or ...

Solar Irradiance Variability

Metrologia, 1991
Support is given for the suggestion that the mean annual value of the solar constant varies as an algebraic sum of changes in effective temperature and photospheric radius. A set of harmonic constituents covering the period 1979 to 1987 is suggested.

Solar Irradiance Observations

Science, 1984
The absolute radiometer on Spacelab 1 was used to obtain solar irradiance observations from space. A number of effects must be taken into account in the data reduction. A provisional value was obtained for the mean solar constant during the observation period (6 to 8 December 1983).

The effect of solar irradiation on solar cells

2021
Photovoltaic systems have been increasingly used in the generation of electrical energy, either as a means of providing electricity in areas where there is no grid connection (stand-alone systems), or by providing electricity to the grid (grid connected systems).

Cloud tracking for solar irradiance prediction

2017 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2017
We propose a video analytic system to segment and track clouds for the purpose of solar irradiance prediction. Ground-based imaging sensors are used to monitor potential sun occlusions for solar irradiance drop prediction, which can be used to assist power ramp control strategies. Sky images are first rectified to remove fisheye artifacts. Cloud pixels

Optimisation of buildings’ solar irradiation availability

Solar Energy, 2010
In order to improve the sustainability of new and existing urban settlements it is desirable to maximise the utilisation of the solar energy incident on the building envelope, whether by passive or active means. To this end we have coupled a multi-objective optimisation algorithm with the backwards ray tracing program RADIANCE which itself uses a ...
