Oriented connectivity-based method for segmenting solar loops
Pattern Recognition, 2006A method based on oriented connectivity that can automatically segment arc-like structures (solar loops) from intensity images of the Sun's corona is introduced. The method is a constructive approach that uses model-guided processing to enable extraction of credible loop structures.

Precise Determination of the Orientation of the Solar Image
Solar Physics, 2010Accurate heliographic coordinates of objects on the Sun have to be known in several fields of solar physics. One of the factors that affect the accuracy of the measurements of the heliographic coordinates is the accuracy of the orientation of a solar image.

Orientation to solar radiation in black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou)
Journal of Comparative Physiology A, 2005We recorded the body axis orientation of free-living black wildebeest relative to incident solar radiation and wind. Observations were made on three consecutive days, on six occasions over the course of 1 year, in a treeless, predominantly cloudless habitat.

Oriented-Attachment Nanocrystals in Solar Cells
2018Solar cells convert solar energy into electricity directly. The first-generation solar cells, which are silicon-based photovoltaic devices are efficient but costly. Although second-generation solar cells are cost-effective, the conversion efficiency is not desirable.

Adaptive sliding mode control for solar tracker orientation
2016 American Control Conference (ACC), 2016In this paper a Parallel Manipulator (Stewart Platform) is used to align and maintain the position of the photovoltaic panels in relation to the Sun. The system is designed on a Stewart platform with two degrees of freedom providing a significant advantage towards reaching the maximum accuracy and economy for this positioning task. To avoid measurement

Solar glint from oriented crystals in cirrus clouds
Applied Optics, 2008Solar scattering on oriented cirrus crystals near the specular reflection direction is modeled using a mix method combining geometric optics and diffraction effects at three wavelengths in the visible and infrared domains. Different potential sources of phase function broadening around the specular direction, such as multiple scattering, solar disk, or

Control-Oriented Concentrated Solar Power Plant Model
IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2015We model the dynamics of solar thermal plants—the first model covering all processes between market demand through power output at millisecond resolution—for the purpose of control design. Our model integrates solar reflectors, power tower, salt tank, boiler, turbine, generator, piping, and pumps along with the flows of energy and information between ...

Method for Increasing the Efficiency of a Biaxial Solar Tracker with Exact Solar Orientation
Applied Solar Energy, 2018Modern solar follow-up systems make it possible to increase a solar cell’s efficiency and, as a result, solar energy utilization. The paper considers modern solar follow-up methods and their operational principles. Trackers are separated onto uniaxial and biaxial according to the plane which tracking occurs. Biaxial trackers are the most efficient. The

A device for precise orientation of solar images
Solar Physics, 1994A spirit level is used to get precise orientation of single solar images taken with a direct pointing photographic or CCD heliograph. A brief discussion of the alignment of this device and of the instrumental errors is given.

Oriented fluorophore luminescent solar concentrators
2011Though the sun's energy is the world's most prominent renewable energy resource, technologies such as photovoltaics (PVs) have yet to become a significant factor in the energy market due in part to the sheer cost of unit deployment. Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSCs) have been investigated since the late 1960s as a means of reducing the cost of PV ...
