Enhanced solar radiation pressure modeling for Galileo satellites

Journal of Geodesy, 2014
This paper introduces a new approach for modeling solar radiation pressure (SRP) effects on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs). It focuses on the Galileo In-Orbit Validation (IOV) satellites, for which obvious SRP modeling deficits can be identified in presently available precise orbit products.

Flexible heliogyro solar sail under solar radiation pressure and gravitational force

Acta Astronautica, 2021
Abstract This study proposes a formulation for the dynamics of a flexible multibody heliogyro solar sail undergoing rigid body motion and multi-blade vibration. The heliogyro solar sail consists of a rigid central hub and flexible solar multi-blades.

Solar radiation pressure

1999
The source of motive force for solar sail spacecraft is the momentum transported to the sail by radiative energy from the Sun. While the observation that light can push matter is quite contrary to everyday experience, it is a commonplace mechanism in the solar system. Perhaps the most striking example is the elegant beauty of comet tails.

Self-excited oscillation of spinning solar sails utilizing solar radiation pressure

Astrodynamics, 2019
The present paper proposes a control method to excite spinning solar sail membranes for three-dimensional use. Using optical property switching, the input is given as the change in magnitude of the solar radiation pressure. The resonance point of this system varies with the vibration state due to its nonlinearity and the change in equilibrium state. To

Effects of Solar Radiation Pressure on Earth Satellite Orbits

Science, 1960
Calculations show that, at a mean altitude of 1000 miles, radiation pressure can displace the orbit of the 100-foot Echo balloon at rates up to 3.7 miles per day, the orbit of the 12-foot Beacon satellite at 0.7 mile per day. For certain resonant conditions this effect accumulates, drastically affecting the satellite's lifetime.
