Determining virus-host interactions and glycerol metabolism profiles in geographically diverse solar salterns with metagenomics [PDF]
Solar salterns are excellent model ecosystems for studying virus-microbial interactions because of their low microbial diversity, environmental stability, and high viral density.

Virioplankton Community Structure in Tunisian Solar Salterns [PDF]
ABSTRACT The microbial community inhabiting Sfax solar salterns on the east coast of Tunisia has been studied by means of different molecular and culture-dependent tools that have unveiled the presence of novel microbial groups as well as a community structure different from that of other coastal hypersaline environments. We have

Diversity of halophilic archaea in the crystallizers of an Adriatic solar saltern [PDF]
Haloarchaeal diversity in the crystallizers of Adriatic Secovlje salterns was investigated using gene fragments encoding 16S rRNA and bacteriorhodopsin as molecular markers. Screening of 180 clones from five gene libraries constructed for each gene targeted revealed 15 different 16S rRNA and 10 different bacteriorhodopsin phylotypes, indicating higher ...

Differences in gene expression patterns between cultured and natural Haloquadratum walsbyi ecotypes
Solar crystallizer ponds are characterized by high population density with a relatively simple community structure in terms of species composition. The microbial community in the solar saltern of Santa Pola (Alicante, Spain), is largely dominated by the ...

Distribution of phytoplankton and artemia in the solar salterns at Tuticorin [PDF]
Salt pan ecosystem of Tuticorin was studied for the distribution of Phytoplankton in two condenser ponds in a particular station, where artemia population was very high. This was monitored for one year in two ponds. Physico chemical parameters were also studied. The population of Bacillariophyceae dominated during monsoon season. Chlorophyceae was high

Culturable Diversity and Enzyme Production Survey of Halophilic Prokaryotes from a Solar Saltern on the Shore of the Oman Sea [PDF]
The prokaryotic residents of the Tis solar saltern in the southeast of Iran on the shore of Oman Sea were investigated by the culture-dependent methods. Sequencing of the PCR-amplified fragments of 16S rRNA genes revealed that bacterial populations were ...

Marinobacter szutsaonensis sp. nov., isolated from a solar saltern [PDF]
A Gram-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, halophilic bacterial strain, NTU-104(T), was isolated from the Szutsao saltern in southern Taiwan, which was previously used as salt production field. The novel isolate grew optimally at 35-40 degrees C, at pH 7.5-8.0 and in the presence of 5 % (w/v) NaCl.

Virgibacillus campisalis sp. nov., from a marine solar saltern [PDF]
A Gram-staining-variable, motile, endospore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, IDS-20T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Strain IDS-20T grew optimally at 37 °C, at pH 7.5–8.0 and in the presence of 4–5 % (w/v) NaCl.

Ch2, a Novel Halophilic Archaeon from an Australian Solar Saltern [PDF]
A novel halophilic archaeon, strain Ch2, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Geelong, Australia. The fact that this organism had a dam-methylated genome suggested that it is closely related to the taxon that includes Halobacterium saccharovorum, Halobacterium sodomense, and Halobacterium trapanicum. A sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene (Ch2
